I had my EPU on Mon. Was planned for a 5 day blast on Saturday. I just received a call from the clinic, 1. Embryo is doing ok, the other 2 not so good. Having the transfer today now.

What's the difference of a day 3 transfer to a 5 day blast??

I don't really know enough about the science behind it but I know that some FS prefer to do the transfer earlier because they think having the embryo back inside you gives it the best chance of survival, whereas others think that letting it grow to day 5 gives you a chance to pick the strongest embryo to transfer. My FS believes in the former so he always does a day 2 transfer. I guess if you only have one good embryo they might think its best to put it back in earlier to give it a better chance? Best of luck, I hope this cycle works out for you original.gif

Hi Bumblebee,

The clinic that I am with will always do a Day 3 transfer if there are 3 or less fert eggs. In my 2 cycles both have been Day 3 cycles and I have never had anything to freeze. Of noth of these cycles I have got a BFP from both. The first ended in Missed MC at 11.5 weeks and the second I am at nearly 8 weeks and all seems OK.

There are many success stories from Day 3 transfers!
Good luck with this cycle.

Some people say 5 day embryos lead to greater success. This worried me when I did a 2 day transfer, but we had success original.gif Some clinics do it based on embryo quality, on quantity and others just do it as protocol.

Good luck!

I only had 3 embryos from my first cycle.

Did one fresh transfer at Day 2/3 - baby.
Did one Day 3 FET - BFN.
Did one more Day 3 FET - baby due next week.

I think it's good that your clinic isn't sticking too firmly to a particular protocol, but rather rolling wit the punches and making the best decision as they go to maximise your chances. Early transfers sometimes result in babies, sometimes in BFNs.

At least this way, you get to transfer something! GL to you.

There is nothing wrong with doing a day 3 transfer. The jury is still out as to whether they are better back in there environment at day 3 or better off being in culture until day 5. Embryologists have a better chance of selection with day 5 as growth from day 3 to blast is pivitol and as we know many dont make it. Many women cannot seem to get a bfp off a day 5 yet on a day 3, and vice versa. Good Luck today

Good luck Bumblebee! I've only ever had 3 day transfers. As the others have said, 5 days is good if they want to be able to choose the best looking embie, but if you don't have that luxury, it can't hurt to put it back where it belongs original.gif
