We are traveling to the US over Xmas and planning to buy a car seat rather than rent one with the hire car. Will we be able to use this back home in terms of complying with aust safety standards ? At first glance I can't find any brands that match the exact name of seats in Australia but Britax (safe n sound) have a large range

We have an american car seat and it is amazing!

The weight and height restrictions are so much better than AUS - my 4.5ds who weighs 24kg and is 116cm is still able to be in a 5 point harness in that seat and will be for another 9 kilos and 10 cm! It cost me about $85USD.

Unfortunately, I cannot bring it back with me, the regulations and insurance is such that if I put DS in the USA carseat in Aus then I am liable for any personal injury he may incur if in an accident... i.e no insurance coverage, as well as facing charges for being non compliant with regulations. Never mind it is a far safer seat all around (Has 5 point attachment to the car aswell as height and weight).

(Ours is over 3 years old now, as we come and go from the states a lot, so just keep it at my mums).

We have a Britax Frontier but don't use it here in Australia for the reasons Siemp outlines.

I do think it's ridiculous that there's no 5-point harness option for older childen here in Australia.

Our DS is only 5 months so I may need to reevaluate the cost and hassle of installing and reinstalling the chair in our different locations versus the total cost of a seat in a car rental

Illegal to use any non Australian Std carseat in Australia.

Generally speaking you will only find Aust Std carseats sold in Australia, NZ (but not only Aust Std seats are sold there so you would only be purchasing a seat which is already available in Aust) and Singapore sometimes.

Generally speaking an Aust carseat is Illegal to use in the US & EU. In Australia it is illegal to use a US or EU carseat. In the US it is illegal to use an Aust or EU carseat. In EU it is illegal to use an Aust or US carseat.

You can not purchase a carseat in the US or EU which would be legal to use here.
