Hi, I am now nearly 6 1/2 weeks pg, and am booked in for my first scan this week. My doctor wants me to have scan's every fortnight, to see that everything is alright and also for peace of mind too. As previously i have had two recurrent m/c. She wrote on the referral form for imaging, dating scan, but i do actually know my dates, she said then i wont have to pay for it. What would a scan cost that wasnt a routine or medical one? Should i mention to the scan person that i have had m/c and to check everything is alright, or do they normally check everything at this early stage? Im feeling quite nervous about the scan.

My dating scans (or more realistically viability scans) have always been done in my FS or OB's office so never had a bill for them sorry, but my NT and 20 week scans cost about $250 - $290 with maybe $100 back from Medicare...

It's understandable you are nervous about the scan! From my experience, the ultrasound place should ask your pregnancy history. I've always been very quick to tell them (even before they asked!) that I was nervous because of my history of X, Y and Z and I've been lucky to have great technicians/doctors that have very quickly allayed my fears for me. I think this can depend on where you have the scan though. I go to a specialist women's ultrasound clinic and they always talk me through what they are doing/measuring/seeing. But I know some places don't say anything as they people doing them aren't actually qualified to make the observations, just take the images IYKWIM. But again, I think if you let them know you are nervous because of your history, I would home the are able to tell you pretty quickly if they can see a HB and what it is.

My dr put dating on my first scan as well, I think it's just routine in early pg. They will check that everything is looking normal for where you are at.

Also when you arrive the imaging place should get you to fill out a form about your pregnancy (or at least the one I go to does) and they will ask about previous m/c.

Thankyou for youre replies, and reassurance too. I have had a scan at this particular clinic before, and the same person does the scan's each time from my experiences. He doesnt really say anything for a while and he spends alot of time pressing buttons and looking at the screen, its so nerve racking when they don't explain things to you! Perhaps i should ask him if its possible to explain things as he goes along, and tell him my previous history as well. If all goes well with this dating scan, then i'll be having a scan every two weeks after that, to check that things are going ok. So i imagine i will have to pay for those ones, but that's ok for peace of mind. x

Maybe just ask him to quickly check for a HB and let you know that is all good, then he can go about his job and you can lay there relieved??

At my 12 weeks scan, the technician did this for me - she knew my history of NTD (and I was physically shaking I was so nervous!) so the first thing she did was show us a beautifully calcified scull and well formed brain. It took 3 seconds, then we were all able to relax and enjoy the rest of the scan while she took all the measurements and did what she had to do.

Hi BJ Thanks for youre reply, I got on well with the scan today, he was very understanding and expained things to me. It was caled a dating scan, but i actually did know my dates and from my the first day of my LMP i will be 6 1/2 weeks, but on the scan i measured just under 5 weeks. Which i questioned with him and he said that it;s quite normal to be within one or two weeks, as it depends on when you O'ed. Does this sound normal?

I would love to hear you're thoughts on this please?

Hi. I am sorry you're going through so much stress. I went through recurrent miscarriages as well (13 is my current total, though some of them were chemical pregnancies).

How long are your cycles on average? If you have a regular as anything 28 day cycle LMP works, but technically LMP is all but useless if you have anything but.

If your cycles are longer or irregular it's most definitely possible that your dates are simply out. And when did you get your BFP?

At the risk of making you feel more anxious, if you are definitely 6½ weeks pregnant you should not be measuring at <5 weeks. The margin of error is about 5 days. Unless of course he only did an abdominal ultrasound and didn't go transvaginal in which case he might have not had a clear picture.

But this all ultimately depends on your cycle length and if you know when you ovulated.

I tend to agree with Nut. It is possible if you've ovulated later that you're not quite as far as you think.

I had my dating/viability scan yesterday and my dates have gone backwards 4 days. I was 7+2 by LMP, but measured at 6+5 which sounds about right to me. I don't know when I ovulated, but my cycles are generally around 31 days.

With DS#2, my dates went backwards by 17 days! I was due by LMP on the 1st, and the 6w scan changed it to the 18th. It was a good thing I hadn't gone for the scan any earlier. By LMP I was over 8 weeks for that first scan! Back then my cycles were much longer, and he arrived by spontaneous labour on the 17th, so that scan was pretty well spot on. Obviously, he was fine even though the dating scan put me back so far

When is your next scan? I had a follow up scan 2 weeks later with DS#2 and he was growing perfectly. That 2 weeks was pretty scary though. Fingers crossed for you!

Hi thanks for youre replies and best wishes. I thought with being, well what i thought was 6 1/2 weeks that it might have been possible to see a heartbeat. But he said i was just under 5 weeks and he could see a sac which looked perfectly normal.
My first day of my Lmp was 30-9-2012, and my BFp was on the 29-10-12, which was a week after Af was due as my cycles are 23 days or so. So perhaps that means that i O'ed later this cycle?
Yes he did an abdominal ultrasound, not transvaginal, so perhaps that could make it abit less accurate. I will be making an appt. to have another ultrasound in two weeks, so really hoping its all abit clearer by then, and that all is alright, it's so hard waiting and not knowing.

Hope all goes well for you. With this pregnancy my first scan was a week behind. Second scan jumped a week ahead. All was fine. When i asked what was more accurate i wad told scans before 7 weeks can be out.
