By beautiful 6mo has been on solids for 1 1/2 months with no trouble on vegies or chicken, but we seem to have found some allergies or sensitivities and i'm not sure what happens now. I gave him yoghurt this week and he broke out in scary looking hives and vomited everywhere (and everywhere the vomit touched came out in worse hives!). it was plain greek yoghurt with his normal fruit mixed in.
he seems to bring up avocado too, watermelon gives him a rash around his mouth and i'm too scared to try oats, cheese, tomatoes or weetbix in case he reacts to those too. he just doesn't like apple puree i think (he gags & fusses), unless it's mixed with other stuff. I'm i'm trying to cut down his farex and banana as he gets constipated. I know diary allergies are common & they usually grow out of it, but i didn't think yoghurt would be problem. milk is in so much baby food (i usually make my own but i use raffetys when we're out). so what do i give him for breakfast? pureed pears every day doesn't seem substantial or varied enough! he loves mango but they're so expensive & he hates the canned stuff. what else is there?? anyone had a bub reacting to milk/yoghurt that they grew out of? how long did it take & how did you know? I'm seeing an allergist this week but i'm worried he'll 'find' lots of allergies because that's what they specialise in (the cynic in me). all advice welcome! My DD is 18months and still allergic to dairy....... I'm still hoping she grows out of it
I'd wait until you see the allergist before you get too worried about it. In the meantime, just offer him other things like vegetables, and avoid common allergen culprits like egg, peanuts, kiwi, strawberries etc. I'd also avoid soy as some kids react to dairy and soy (I think they have a common protein). You're pretty lucky to see an allergist so quickly. My DD has known allergies to dairy, egg and peanuts and we still had to wait 6 months to get into to see one! Also I doubt weetbix or oats would cause a reaction (especially hives) but I'm certainly not an expert and if you're not sure then just avoid it Good luck ETA: I also keep a box of Telfast Hayfever Allergy or Itchy Skin Rash/ Hives syrup on hand. Its for 6mths+ and proved quite handy when we were trying new food. This post has been edited by eskimoo: 11/11/2012, 12:56 PM |

Yes, you are very lucky to get in to see an Allergist so quickly! Personally I would hold off any new food until I saw the Allergist and not give him anything I thought may be a problem. We have waited 6 months + for our appointments.
My twins both have/had cow milk protein intolerance. One grew out of it at about 13mths while the other still has it at nearly 9yrs. No hives but they both would vomit, tummy pains and rashes especially around their mouth even with a small amount of yogurt. Its a good idea to keep an antihistamine on hand just in case but don't use it before your appointment with the Allergist just in case he/she wants to do any tests. (I think its at least 24hrs at least but I would be checking before using it even 48hrs before just in case.) |
