Mine is Abigail, we call her Abi, but she is often called Abs also. (or crabby abi when she is in a mood)

Mine's Abigail too, she gets Abby or Abby Cadabby (other than Abs you really can't shorten Abby much)

I don't have an Abby but NN's are made in many ways. For example lengthening so Abigail, other associated name Abra to Abra Cadabra to Caddie, circuitous route from the name so Gail, word associations direct or circuitous so Storm, opposites so Sunshine, Abba, then Abba to Frida or Anna or from one of ABBA's songs so Fernando (Fern, Ferns, Fernanda, Fernie, Nan, Nancy), Lu/Lulu from Waterloo, Moneybags or Honey rhymes with Money from Money, Money. Abseil to Seilie to Shippy, Sis/Cis from Sister from Abbey...
Anyway they often just happen and of course often from the surname or a play on the middle name or initials or whatever. Also from something about the person eg I know a grown Burt whose name is Nicholas but he was in love with Burt on Sesame Street as a preschooler or my DH who was Tex and still is to some because he liked watching Westerns when he was little. I'm sure people could give you heaps of examples of these sorts of NN's. I think Lulu works regardless of name actually. You can just pick any name for a NN. My daughter was Oscarina a lot after Oscar the Grouch for obvious reasons. This post has been edited by Gudrun: 10/11/2012, 10:00 AM |
