Wondering what people would think of this sort of bathroom arrangement.
We have 1 bathroom and a separate toilet in our 3-bedroom house. We're unlikely to add a 2nd bathroom before we sell but REALLY hate having a separate toilet. The one we have comes off the laundry and shares a wall with the bathroom. I've gathered that most Aussie buyers seem to want a separate toilet if there is no 2nd bathroom, so we've been trying to think of compromises. We're fielding the idea of putting a (lockable) cavity door in between the toilet and bathroom so that one has the option of opening the door and having a unified bathroom, or closing/locking the door and accessing the toilet separately via the laundry. How would that go over with you if you were looking at a house? We're planning to do the floor tiles and paint all the same throughout bathroom/toilet/laundry so that there is no visual disruption when any or all doors are open. But the cavity door would be there as a privacy measure for those who hate unified bathrooms. At least, that's our way of thinking. What do you think? |

We had this in the house I grew up in. The toilet had cavity doors allowing access from either the bathroom or laundry.
It worked fine. |

i think the reason most people prefer a seperate bathroom/toilet is so if one person is having a 20 min shower the toilet can still get used. Your solution wont fix that. The last house we looked at had a bathroom like that and to be honest it was the first thing we were going to change back.

I would think it odd to be honest, but not a deal breaker if the rest of the house suited our needs. If you're going to be selling soon why don't you just leave the toilet separate? Save your money/ time on other things you might need to do before selling.

I don't understand why any one would want the only toilet in the house in the bathroom, which is a busy room anyway. There was a bit of a fad for this in the 60s/70s when old outdoor dunny was replaced in favour of indoors toilets. Older houses undergoing renos of outdoor toilets often had no space for a toilet anywhere other than in the bathroom. My brother's house has this, and when the family go to stay every morning there's someone hopping around wondering whether they can hold out until the bathroom is free of family showering, or whether (if male) a trip to water the lemon tree is in order.
We have friends who have the arrangement you are suggesting, with a laundry and bathroom with the toilet in the middle and doors opening to either the laundry or bathroom. Works OK. When over there for a party, it can be a bit nerve-racking sitting on the toilet and wondering which door is going be approached. Bet I'm not the only one who hates someone knocking and asking if it's occupied! If you go down this path I'd suggest making sure the doors have secure locks that can't be flipped open from the outside by someone not paying attention. |

I'm not sure why it wouldn't fix that? If the toilet/bathroom door is locked it's no different than it being a wall there. And yes, a cavity door is a door that slides into a cavity in the actual wall, it's not a standard opening door.
We're not selling for about 5 more years but will definitely not have the money to add a bathroom. In the meantime, we want the benefits of a unified bathroom without removing the resale value of a separate toilet. Glad to hear some people have had this and liked it! |
