After 4 months into a 15month FIFO job, DH has pulled the pin. He has negotiated to move back home and I'm SO HAPPY!

I thought we could do it, but we couldn't.... failure never felt so good!

And you know what this is the best possible outcome.

If he hadn't tried it it would always have been niggling away there... now when someone says "Go FIFO the money is too good to ignore!" he can say FROM EXPERIENCE - "It's not for me.."

My best friend's DH is just about to start a job FIFO, they have an 18 month old and she doesn't drive so is going to be really isolated. I'm worried they're making a big mistake. Ill be there for her as much as possible but live 45 mins away and have two kids of my own.

Jo-v, i guess the thing is it works fine for some, but not everyone. And maybe like us, they'll have to try it and see. Hopefully they'll manage, many find a happy medium. At any rate, she's lucky she has you as a friend, I have really been surprised (in good and bad ways), about the support I have received from particular friends!

DH has done FIFO since we were 18 (9 years) so I am use to it although he does 4/4 and with a young son and one on the way it gets hard. Best thing to do is have a really good support network I live where Oil rig / coal seam gas FIFO workers are common so we all get together and have time without the other half.
My DH works overseas so I get a 20 min phone call once a fortnight it's hard but I wouldn't have it any other way it works for us and we are lucky to be under 30 and own 2 properties already due to his work.
Glad you and your DH gave it a go at least it won't sit there in your mind of what could of been

Congratulations on making such a big decision! I think that fifo can be really hard on families unless it is something that kids have lived with since day dot.

We're only 7 months into a Fifo lifestyle and thankfully it is working well for us. Poor DH though, he feels like he is missing out on absolutely everything with the kids and wishes he could be home every night but at the same time acknowledges that we get more time together in his week off than we had at any point when running a business from home!

As for the money being fantastic - it definitely depends on what job you are doing. DH is working as a driller offsider right now and although we are doing ok, it's still a struggle at times.

I hope your DH is able to find a job closer to home that meets all of your familiy's needs and he is happy in.
