I want to buy my DP this lamp for xmas

but it is, of course, a US config. Is it safe to run something consistently on an adaptor? What is the risk if not (ie fire, shorting)?

Should be safe but adaptors to run US electricals in Aus are quite expensive because you need a transformer to adapt the voltage rather than just an adapter for the 2 pin plug . You might find an electrician could rewire it for the same price.

DS1 has a lamp from thinkgeek... i picked up for an adapter for $10ish...

Meh, please check that your lamp is compatible with 240v power. If it isn't you are overloading the appliance and it could be dangerous.

Kate-ko, you could always get the seller to check the voltage for you before you commit to buy.

A step down transformer will cost you around $100 which is why I sugggested an electrician, or even a lighting store may be able to rewire it cheaper.

hey badcat...

Ex did check it out and said that it was fine when my sister gave it to him... Ex is an IT geek and buys a lot from that site so was aware to check it... if it wasn't it can run on batteries which was the 2nd option.

i do now remember a alarm clock from the same site which we had to buy a voltage convertor for but it had multiple settings and DS1 who was quite young at the time kept flicking the switch and fried the clock...

think geek are usually pretty good with their responses... email them and they should be able to tell you the voltage info.

eta: on the description details it has " US 120 volts, 60Hz"... you might want to check if it compatible with them but looks like it isn't going to be a standard adapter job

I love ThinkGeek too. Waiting on an order right now actually, and yes they are very good with the customer service stuff.
