My MIL insists when out with my 6.5 month old to give him ice cream "because be is thirsty", despite me being there to BF him. She is visiting from OS and this is the third time in 24 hours she has given him ice cream when out and about. She wants to start taking the baby for walks alone and I don't want him to have any more ice cream!! He is BF and is unable to drink water from a cup/ sippy cup and will spit it out of if given in a bottle (will take milk in a bottle). Does anyone have any suggestions??? Something she can give to him when they're out walking and he becomes "thirsty".Thanks!
Just to add I cannot express breastmilk. This post has been edited by sarahec: 07/11/2012, 10:14 PM |

I would not be feeding ice cream to a 6.5 mth old op.
Try different sippy cups or refrigerate cooled boiled water, I find dd seems to like water when it's cooler. |

A breastfed baby doesn't need additional fluids. Water in a sippy at the absolute most. You're the mother, just say no.

My DS is 14 months old and the only liquid he has is breast milk. He refuses water (and solids but that's a whole other story).
I would forget about trying to think of something for your DS to drink and just tell her that she can't give him anything. If you can't trust her, don't let her be alone with your child. |

Firstly put your food down about the ice cream! Not on.
Have you tried a bottle with a straw for water, it took our DS a while to get the hang or it ( and water) but now at 11 months he loves it. It will take time so keep offering it. I found once DS was eating more solids his like for water went up, we offer it at every meal time. If he's BF then he prob doesn't need water & I doubt is thirsty..if he is tell her to give him to you & offer the boob! He's your son & you need to be firm.I'd have kittens if my MIL did that, she'd know about it quick smart. |

My DD likes to suck on a stick of cucumber - she doesn't eat much of it, but it's full of moisture.

Can you get your husband/partner to speak to their mother about this?
I would hate for my MIL to do that, ice cream is definately not for babies, what on earth would make her think that. There is so much sugar andadditives in it. It's possible that it's something that they thought was ok when she was raising her kids. My MIL thinks I should give my bub milk arrowroot biscuit soaked with water. This WILL NOT be happening, it's still a processed biscuit that has a lot of sugar in it. |
