This guy (1830-1904) was born plain old Edward, but changed his name to the spelling above. He is famous for being the photographer that created the first series of photos of a galloping horse, and hence proved that the horse's legs are all off the ground during the movement (called the suspension). Is he the first to 'uneek' his own name? |

It's simply the Anglo-Saxon spelling. Could be the spelling of Edward ancestors.

There is an advertising guy in Sydney called Siimon Reynolds - he changed from boring old "Simon with one-i " for some weird numerology reason too I believe.

It's only over the last couple of centuries that there became set ways of spelling names - or anything else- so this is probably harking back to a way that the family spelt this in the past.
Due to the number of different spellings of common names in medieval times there have arisen heaps of what we see as variations on the same name now eg Catherine, Katherine, Katharine etc Agnes, Annes, Annys. Annais. etc |
