I have a fancy dress party coming up (I hate fancy dress parties) and I have a skirt that would suit the idea I have for a costume except it's brown, and I would like it to be black. I never wear this skirt anyway - mainly because it's brown and I am not sure what I was thinking when I bought a brown skirt, but also because it's a bit too big, so I have no concerns with dyeing it black. It's a thin cotton - three layers and each layer is almost sheer, so it is very lightweight and it's reasonably dark brown. How difficult would it be to dye it black? It is quite long and a bit full, so there is a bit of fabric to deal with... I'm just wondering what the chances are of it coming out all black, or if it's more likely that it will be a swirly blacky-brown disaster...

Cotton is much easier to dye than anything containing synthetics like polyester. It won't be hard to get all over colour with something like Dylon, but whether it will go black enough might be an issue. I'd try it and see, you've got nothing to lose except $12 or so for the dye.
