I need some help please!

I thought we had names picked out - Julien for a boy, and Emily for a girl. I still love Julien, but have gone off Emily a bit. I like traditional/common names, but it's just a little too common.

Other names we have considered are Sophie (same problem), Olivia and Emmeline (I like, DH doesn't). Middle name will be Michelle - family name, can't budge.

I just came across Emelia on a list of baby names from 1900 - I think I'm a bit in love, but DH prefers Amelia. For some reason, I'm not a fan of A names.

So, looking for opinions on Amelia/Emelia, and any other suggestions.

Thanks!

Con Sprezzatura.
I think Emelia will cause spelling/recognition problems for a lot of people.

How about...

Edith Michelle
Joanna Michelle

Amelia is a fantastic name. Timeless, classic and pretty. I'm not fond of Emilia. Amelie is another option. It's kind of inbetween Emily and Amelia!!

Julien is gorgeous. Love the French spelling. Really, really, truly!

Re Emily I've always felt it lacked the lustre of related names even when there weren't a lot around.

Related options:

Emilienne (keeping up the French)
Emilie (also keeping up the French and adding a bit of interest but will be said the same as Emily in Oz)
Amalia (this is lovely IMO. Feminine and elegant)
Emera
Emelita (or Emmelita)
Emelina (or Emmelina)

Agree with Ange re Emilia. It will be spelt the same because it sounds the same as Amelia. However both are lovely IMO and have 'the lustre'. Emmeline is just a great name and I think suffragette. Pity you're not getting the support for it.

When combo-ed up with Michelle I would consider these:

Emmelina Michelle
Emera Michelle
Amalia Michelle
Emelita Michelle

Good Luck!

I love all the names you mentioned but I'd spell Julian this way.

If you like Julian/Julien for a boy could Juliette, Julia or Juliana be an option for a girl?

Emilia is a family name for us so I love it very very much. It was the name of my Italian grandmother and it's also the name of my niece (who was the firstborn granddaughter on that side of the family).

Just thought I'd mention it as another alternative spelling. My Emilia has never had problems with people mispronouncing her name. It's pretty obvious and there are only so many names in the world that can be spelt without checking with it's owner first anyway.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I did put forward Juliette, husband vetoed it unfortunately. But it is a beautiful name.

Am LOVING Emilia, will have to convince DH! Also love Amelie.

How woul you pronounce Amalia? The middle A like day, or like car?

Originally I suggested Julian, but DH is of German heritage and he suggested Julien, as it's the more common spelling in Germany. It's really grown on me, I absolutely love it now! I think it's nice for kids to have names that are a nod to their heritage.
