Again drowning is happening within communities around the country and whilst these tragedies are not reported in the media, they are happening.

Again I remind every parent, carer, godparent, aunt, uncle, old sibling, grandparents and friends to watch these messages and LISTEN TO THEM and then ACTION them. saving lives is critical because once a young child has drowned the chances of survival and a normal are life are very minute. 2 kids out of every 100 will walk away without brain injury, 93 will DIE and the other five will live with brain injuries/disabilities and complications.

As Australia's only charity providing support for families of all ages for both fatatlities and non fatal drownings I urge everyone one of you to help promote messages of safety, encourage everyone to Supervise and have barriers in place to prevent the immersions, please DO NOT rely on the fact that your children can swim, have breathe control in water in their controlled enviroments. DROWNING environments are UNCONTROLLED and most kids who drown can either swim or were enrolled in lessons.

Water is dangerous but its also fun. Encourage and explain to older kids NEVER to open pool gates and let little kids in, never allow older kids to supervise young children in the water or bath and always empty buckets, close toilet lids, bathrooms etc.

Always Supervise around water its your first line of defence and have activated barriers in place at all times.

USPC Message with Kathleen Reilly I urge community groups and forums to promote this video, I have come to know Kathleen and her work in the USA very well, having met with her I could only wish that Australia could produce videos like this and play them on TV to constantly educate on the risks around the home.

2 kids in bathsm 4 in pools and 1 in a bucket in the last month just in QLD alone. Please dont be naive around water it kills.

Hi Kat - I don't have a pool but do have young children around the house (friends etc) . Is there anything I should keep an eye out for in particular?

The video links above its water always but just remember that just because you don't have water your kids still need supervising, the house is a dangerous place and many people just don't realise the dangers that do exist that can hurt children. Its all about supervision and Barriers, take away the risk to prevent the accidents.

ovens/stove
electrical cords
Blind cords
baths/buckets/dogs bowls any water source even the washing machine
Television sets
any stepped display cabinet
Etc the house dangers go on.

Two truths about drowning that I've learned in the past two weeks, since my friend lost her precious son in a drowning accident:

1. A child can drown in 20 seconds. Not minutes, but seconds. Twenty seconds. It's that quick.

2. CPR - as I learned from Kat today - fails in 93 percent of drowning incidents.

Put simply, there are no second chances sad.gif
