My DH and I have been discussing names for our impending arrival (this naming caper is one of the more difficult things I/we have had to do).

One of the names I like is more a nickname, so we were going through the full versions of the name and one in particular we dismissed as being "too bogan" (this was done instantly and simultaneously in our conversation). It wasn't the spelling, but more the vibe of the name.

So it got me thinking about what makes a name "too bogan"? Unique spelling? Unfortunate connotation?
I guess it is a personal thing.

So what makes a name "too bogan" for you?

Im curious what was the name that you considered "too bogan"? I don't think a name would make someone a bogan, I think it would be a personality. I've never heard of anyone referring to a name as bogan lol.

As a midwife, I have noticed a trend of children being named "nickname" names with no intention to use the full names at all. I have recently heard of a Stevie, Roxy and Coco for girls and Jax and Raffy or boys. None of these are my style, I wouldnt call them bogan and the parents were not bogan themselves but it proves the point that naming a child has changed and people are veering away from giving the name they like and also giving their child another "proper" name.

Cobwebs are the new black!
For me personally- knowing a bogan with that name would make me steer clear of it and spelling a 'legit' name differently. However for other people I wouldn't assume bogan for those 2 things if that makes sense.

My SIL's have used it.
I'd share some of the monstrosities they have inflicted on their kids but that combination of names is pretty identifying.

Unique spellings, ethnic names completely unrelated to the parents heritage, or one of 'those' names that while completely conventional in spelling 'everybody' knows is Bogan.
For me my daughters name (Aiyanna) was pushing the Bogan borders, but we loved the pronunciation and the alternative spellings got mangled when we showed them to relatives.

For me it is entirely in the spelling. There is a little girl at DS1's kindy called Typhanie (Tiffany sad.gif ) Lovely name, but the appalling spelling choice in my opinion has turned it completely bogan.

Well, one would not want to be associated with the underclass if one could help it.

Spelling is the #1 - but mispronunciation of a legitimate name is nearly on par...

(Yes I'm still mentally scarred by poor Juanita.... "WE pronounce it 'Jew -a- neater'..")
