Just considering the vitamin K given at birth. I understand the different forms (oral and intramuscular) and the reasons for giving it (prevention of haemorrhagic disease of the newborn).

Jut wondering if anyone out there has chosen not to have it?

edit - thanks Rebothy

This is a Formal Cheese occasion.
Not haemolytic disease. Haemorrhagic disease.

I have done a bit of research on this as part of my studies. It's not one that I would refuse.

I refused it. I refused everything they wanted to give or check my son in the first days after birth. I had many reasons for my hesitations, but decided before he was born that I would plan to refuse but change my mind if he had a traumatic birth.
The hearing check lady's gobsmacked response to my refusal still amuses me though. Apparently she'd never had anyone say no before.
I was pretty nervous that I might make the wrong decision but it has been fine for our family.

I am glad it worked for you but a baby doesn't need to have a traumatic birth to get haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
Your hearing check lady should not have registered her disbelief with you but she is right....it doesn't happen too often that anyone refuses.

Same here.

I have come across a few couples at the birth centre who have refused Vit K and Hep B - I believe they didn't want baby to have injections so soon after birth (they also refused oral so perhaps there was more to it).

What is your concern OP?

We opted for DS not to have it.. I stated this in my birth preferences, and had discussed it with my midwife beforehand.
We decided that we would discuss after his birth if he may need it or not. My midwife didn't feel he would need it, so we decided against it.
We also opted not to have the Hep B shot after birth too.

We simply felt that there was no need to overload a newborn with things they may not need straight after birth.
Also, we didn't feel it was a good idea to be creating another possible site for infection in a hospital, which - by it's nature- is full of sick people & germs.

I refused the injection, but had it given orally.

Paradox can I ask why you refused the hearing test?

Not criticising at all, obviously it is a choice, I would just be interested to know what you you didn't like about it.
