Hi,
DH has been out of work for 4 mths now and getting very discouraged. Short version, he is a carpenter/ site manager and last 2 companies he worked for went broke. Anyway a friend said to try the mines. He emailed mining Australia and they are after a $200 fee. We havent signed up and they keep re-emailing and dropping the fee price. So, has anyone dealt with Minong Australia and is it worth it?? OR, how else is it possible to get into miming? THanks, Caz |

Don't pay them anything. It is a scam.
OH is a fitter so it would have been a different route for him to get in. Persistence is the key and be prepared for it to take a while to get a job. But keep applying. |

What state are you in OP? I have heard it is near impossible to get work in the mines in QLD however there are alot of opportunites in WA. Rio Tinto are doing a massive recruitment drive at the moment.
My DH is in the NSW mines as a fitter and didn't find it hard at all to get work. He was previously in the defence force. |

Sounds like a scam to me too..... The mining game is not all its cracked up to be. I am forced to work full time as my role comes with a house and it's too expensive to rent privately, daycare is $1000 ftn and I've seen DH 5 nights in the last month!
The best place to look for mining work is on Seek, or register with an employment agency like Skilled, Intergrated or Chandler McLeod. You do have to be persistent and patient and be mindful that your first year or so might not be particularly prosperous, it takes a while to climb the ladder and see the cash roll in. |

That sounds dodgy op. Don't pay. Try seek.com or Hays or as pp said, try the the rio / bhp etc websites. If he knows someone in mining get them to scope out any possibilities.

He is better off applying to the companies directly via their websites.
Not sure where you live but as a PP said Rio has over 6000 positions to fill in North WA and will pay for full time employees to FIFO of most major cities in Australia and some overseas. |

DH has been in mining for a while, but when he was looking to change jobs, he contacted recruiting agencies such as Hays, Bielby, Chandler Macleod, etc. DH was very specific about what he wanted and they sent him all kinds of stuff that did not meet his requirements.

The best way to get in - is to try and find recruitment companies that deal with Carpentary / Mining. Next bet - just start applying through their websites direct. Areas that are booming at the moment are Mackay, Gladstone, Wandoan, Chinchilla... mainly CQ... plenty of jobs to be had - you just need to get your foot in the door! Good luck |

Hi op - go straight to mine websites, seek or a reputable recruitment agency.
We are in WA and it isn't as easy as people assume to get in. First up, you MUST have an HR licence for 90+% of jobs, even if you're just a store man. Otherwise they won't look at your application. Secondly, despite my husband having licenses and experience for multiple vehicles, they would not take him on because he didn't have at least 12 months mine site experience. (just like when you leave highschool and you can't get a job because you 'don't have experience' - you want to shake someone and say you will have experience once you get a job!!) he now knows why - he has seen blokes rock up to site, not even start their first shift, get homesick/can't hack the heat, and leave on the plane the next day, and the company has to start the recruiting all over again. And the mining companies talk to each other - give yourself a reputation, good or bad, and it will be known... My husband went through a recruitment agency who got him a short term contract to work for a company he had previous experience with (in the city). They then took him on full time, so now he has 12 months of FIFO experience to start applying for better paid jobs in areas he would prefer. Seriously, about 15 years ago, the mining companies would take whoever they could get - but now the word is out and they can afford to be picky about who they employ. Also, be aware that Perth accommodation is scarce - even camping grounds have implemented max periods you can stay because families have been moving in for lack of affordable housing. There was 65k people that moved to WA in a 12 month period - supply and demand = expensive. This post has been edited by new~mum~reenie: 12/07/2012, 05:42 PM |
