Hi everyone.

I have searched through the forum and haven't found any mention of any of the things that I have questions about, and I would desperately like to find out if anyone is in a similar position to me or has been through it.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive #2 for over a year. All tests have come back normal (sperm analysis, bloods). Then they attempted a hysterosalpingogram (twice) to see if my tubes were blocked. The first time they thought I had a cervical stenosis and/or narrow opening of the cervix, but concluded that this would not be causing my infertility because I still get my period every month and it's able to 'come through'. Then I saw a FS who managed to examine me and conclude that my uterus is acutely tilted, so this would have to be accounted for when attempting the hysterosalpingogram the second time. The second time failed as well.
Now my FS wants to do a hysteroscopy/laparoscopy as she has concluded that it's not worth trying the hysterosalpingogram again.

Not only am I feraful of surgery, but the out-of-pocket expenses for this surgery are huge given that we don't have hospital cover. And I can't help but think that we don't even know if there is an actual blockage, which would warrant the surgery. If I knew there was then I wouldn't hesitate to have the surgery, but I have heard that many women have slightly blocked tubes due to mucus that is expelled when a hysterosalpingogram is performed.

Does anyone else have a tilted uterus - is it an impossibility to perform a hysterosalpingogram in such case? Does anyone know of a Rubin's test where they blast air into the tubes and make them 'come unstuck' that way? Has anyone else got any advice that might help - i would be really, really appreciate it!

Thank you for your reply. I was in a lot of pain with the second one as well and they used an analgesic cream on my cervix. I wonder if anyone has been able to request their gyno to be present to do the insertion if necessary? I think that would be my best bet as there doesn't really seem to be any radiologists around here who specialise in these types of procedures.

I didn't have the same experience and had no problems with the hysterosalpingogram but at a later time I was advised to have a hysteroscopy/laproscopy after years of IVF not working and unexplained infertility. We ended up going public and even though there was a waiting time it wasn't really long and I didn't consider having it done as a private patient. I did ring a couple of hospitals though to see who had the shortest waiting time and which specialist they recommended being referred to for a quick procedure. After years of ttc we were happy to have a break for a few months while waiting (we had actually stopped IVF at this stage and were looking for an egg donor) but I know not everyone would be happy to wait. Maybe call your local hospital and see how long the public waiting list is or ask your specialist if they operate in any public hospitals or know anyone that does?
