We got Ds a big toy box from K-mart i think (well it was in the Home area i think it's for outside for gardening etc but it's huge) and we have decorated it and we just put all of ds's toys in there.

Mum to two boys!! :O
I am a big fan of a giant basket of toys. That's what we have in our loungeroom. Its super easy for the kids or I to throw toys in when its time to tidy up. Then we have a few large toys out plus some containers of lego etc. I rotate the larger toys and store the spares under the stairs.

In our playroom we have an Expedit, a chest/seat and some baskets.

We also use the Ikea expedit here in the playroom and bedroom LOL

In DS's playroom we have a 4x4 expedit. The bottom 2 rows have boxes in them. Atm they store: puppets, wooden blocks, baby dolls/stuffed toys, musical instruments, ELC happyland stuff, cars and such things, misc plastic toys (wind up radio & tv, shape sorter etc), a is full of mr potato head stuff. The 3rd row is full of books and then the top row has games, puzzles and that sort of thing.
Next to the expedit we also have an Ikea storage thing that used to be part of our livingroom storage. It's got doors on most of the cabinets though and in this we have most of the older aged board games, older educational books (atlas's etc) and in the higher places all our art/craft supplies like paint, glue, pompoms etc. His ELC big stuff sits on top of the Expedit in his playroom (his little people does the same in our office which is his play area upstairs)

In the living room we have the Ikea table and chairs and a basket which holds all the colouring books and paper etc. I have a wooden bowl (salad bowl sold at Kmart for $8) that holds all the crayons, markers etc) that sits in the middle of the table. The Easel is also in the loungeroom and the chalk, magnetic letters and felt stuff is stored with it. We've also got 2 large felt baskets (howards storage world) in the living room. 1 has all of DSs cleaning stuff in it (vacuum, mop, broom etc) as well as all of his balls. The other I rotate around with the plastic toys in the tub in his playroom.

In his bedroom we have a 2x4 expedit. 4 of those are for books and the other 4 are for clothes (usually socks, hats, mittens etc that are currently too big or wrong season) and his building type toys. He also has a Ikea Lack table hacked into a duplo table in his room. Under that we have one of the boxes that fits into the Expedit full of his Duplo - it fits perfectly under the Lack table.

I think that with kids that small, splitting the toys up into their different types is actually going to be a lot more hard work.

Obviously puzzle pieces need to stay together, the Lego needs to stay together etc. But I'd just let the kids chuck the dolls and cars and teddies and balls in together.

I posted some pics of our playroom here: http://www.lovelyliving.com.au/communitybl...lourfuplayroom/

And you can see how the drawing stuff and the blocks are kept separate but most other toys just get thrown into a Trofast tub
