Not sure if it's safe or not but have heard that wetting a lysine tablet and making it into a sort of paste and applying it directly to the cold sore helps, as well as taking them orally.

I just used ice on it when I was pregnant as was advised by dr and pharmacist not to use Zovirax (it hasn't been tested on pregnant ladies so they don't actually know if there are any long term side affects).

You can use those patches that they sell as they don't actually have any chemical in them.

I've always found zovirax to be useless, it seemed to make them get worse and then they would reappear in a week. I swear by aloe vera gel, clears them up in about a day! I find it more effective than prescription medication

Ive just had a coldsore (not pregnant) and used a lysine/zinc/vitamin c tablet. Directions state that its suitable in pregnancy but with a half dose.

Ice and tea tree oil also work well.

I'd can't understand anyone suffering clod sores these days . As its in the herpe virus ,you can take Valtrex at the first tingle and it won't come up at all and as it is the drug they give women who are in their 3rd trimester and have gentile herpes for a safe delivery , I guess you must be able to take it .. No one has to suffer them , they aren't PBS listed but can be claimed on private health and as you only take 3 to 4 tablets each out break it works out the same price as all those chemist lines .. Worth asking Dr , my Friend has used it for years and if you have special occasion coming up you can take to prevent an out break .. Hope this helps

Zovirax (active ingredient 'aciclovir') cream is safe to use all during pregnancy. There is lots of long term safety data on this drug and it is the antiviral of choice during pregnancy (even via the oral or intravenous route which are MUCH higher doses). The amount you would systemically absorb from the cream would be so small anyway, and the risk to a fetus of a systemic HSV (cold sore virus) infection would be much much greater, so I would not hesitate in treating the coldsore with Zovirax cream, but speak with the pharmacist if you need some reassurance.
