Hi Ladies, My DD who is 10 months today has been sick for over a week now and I wondering if anyone has advice on anything else I could/should be doing.. I will give the background of what I have done so far, but at the moment I am feeling a little helpless
Tuesday before last DD (6) came home from school feeling unwell, she has diohhrea all night and we kept her home from school Wednesday but she was fine all day. Come Friday DD (10mths) had some diohhrea and vomiting so I figured she was getting a dose of what older DD had, she was sick all weekend and on Monday (public holiday) we changed 20 diohhea nappies! All this time she was perfectly happy (never even cried when she had pooped) was keeping up her fluids and weeing. Tuesday we went to the Dr's and he was happy she wasn't very unwell, did a stool sample and sent it off Wednesday we went back and Dr said that there was nothing 'nasty' like Rotovirus and they would grow it for bacteria for a week - but basically just keep doing what we were doing. On Tues, Wed and Thurs the number of poops decreased and it looked like she was getting better. Friday she started back up with the increased diohhrea and vomiting again. Once again she was completely happy and has been all weekend. I have called HealthDirect twice since Friday and they keep saying she is fine to be at home - no dehydration and we just have to let the diohhrea run its course. My issue is that she has diohhrea now for 10 days - she is our 4th child and we have never had anything like this before - even at the height of a family wide gastro outbreak! Has anyone else dealt with this? Has a GP suggested anything different to treat it? I really don't think she is 'sick' enough for a trip to the hospital. I am taking her back to the GP in the morning but I wanted to know if anyone had any advice before I go... Thanks fo reading my mini novel - any advice would be greatly appreciated! Amanda |

Sorry although she isn't showing the signs my first reaction is to ask for a blood glucose test for diabetes. My eldest DD has diabetes so as a result it is something I am always on the watch for with my second DD.
Good luck and I hope that the illness just goes away and resolves it's self for you. |

Thanks for that.
I just got a call from our doctors asking us to come back in tomorrow morning so I am guessing something has shown up in the tests they did. |

Good luck I hope that it is a minor issue for you. My second DD is just 11 months so roughly the same age as your little one.

If you formula feed then this may help. My DD had bad diarrhea for 3 weeks after her 6 month shots(very mucusy!)finally the GP suggested lactose free formula. Apparently diarrhea can damage the gut and can cause temporary lactose intolerance. There was an immediate improvement and she stayed on it for a few weeks on and off until the gut healed. I bf as well so only modified the bottle feeds. Hope you get some answers from your Doc!

Thanks for that. DD is already on Lactose free formula - we went through the bad reaction to normal forumla at 3months.
We saw the dr this morning and of course she has been fine since yesterday morning! But she had a bacterial infection (not sure of its exact name) but it is one that is reportable to the health department so we had to go fill in a form. He checked DD out and said she should be fine now - it seems to have run its course on its own. Thanks again! |

Have you tried probiotics. My DS was lactose intolerant and seemed to get a lot of gastro bugs and the diahorrea. After each bug his intolerance seemed worse and I found giving him probiotics really helped replace some good gut bacteria.
