STUDENT MIDWIFE- GOLD COAST HOSPITAL

Hi Everyone biggrin.gif

If you are birthing at GOLD COAST HOSPITAL , I am a student Midwife looking to support you throughout your pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum journey.

As a student, I would firstly meet you at one of your antenatal appointments with your registered healthcare professional. If you agree to have me 'follow' you through your pregnancy, I will attend many of your antenatal appointments with you, be there for the birth of your baby and also attend your postnatal visits.

Benefits Include:
We would get to know each other
I would be a familiar face at your appointments
I will provide extra support

Previous women have described having a student as 'a wonderful support', also saying they wouldn't hesitate to have a student midwife again in the future.

Please PM me if you are interested in having me as a student or would like more information.

Hello, and congratulations on this wonderful, exciting (and probably a little bit scary) time in your life. original.gif

My name is Tobie-Jane. I'm 33 years old and a mother of four beautiful "babies" (my youngest is five and started Prep this year, but they're all still my babies). I am also a student midwife at Griffith University. As part of our program we have the opportunity to follow twenty women through their pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period until their baby is six weeks old. These are called Continuity of Care experiences. One of the major benefits is to allow us to experience the journey to becoming a mother from the woman's perspective, by getting to know the woman and her family and having the chance to discuss her thoughts, feelings, fears and joys.

If you will be birthing your baby at Logan Hospital, or you are planning a homebirth with a private midwife in the greater Brisbane area, you are 35 weeks pregnant or less, and you would like to consider having a student midwife follow your journey then I would love to hear from you. As your student midwife I will attend your antenatal appointments, you would call me once you go into labour and I will attend while you birth your baby, and I would then visit you and your baby after the birth, including the six week check up.

Obviously the experience is very valuable for me as a student, however there are also benefits for women who invite a student midwife to follow them through their pregnancy and birth. Women who participate in this program often report that having a student midwife is a great experience and that having a friendly, familiar face during a time which can be filled with so much uncertainty is a wonderful thing. In fact, some women enjoy the experience so much that they call and request the same student for subsequent pregnancies. Research also shows that women who receive continuity of care from a known care provider, even if that's a student, have much better outcomes including lower rates of intervention, reporting greater satisfaction with the birth...and even shorter labours!

If you have any questions or would like to discuss having me as your student midwife, then please send me a PM and I will be in touch. Thank you.

Hi ladies!

My name is Michelle and I'm a second year nursing and midwifery student of the University of Queensland. As part of my course, I'm required to 'recruit' pregnant women and follow and support them throughout their pregnancy. The expectations and commitment from women participating in this experience is completely voluntary, therefore at any point you can pull out.

Should you agree to participate in this experience, you will be required to engage in:

- A professional relationship with a midwifery student, who is under the guidance of an academic midwifery mentor, from early pregnancy to the first few weeks following your baby's birth; this will require the student to negotiate suitable meeting or telephone conversations times with you

- Offering the student the opportunity to accompany you to pregnancy/prenatal visits, childbirth education sessions, exercise classes, visits to the agency where the birth of your baby will take place, and the after birth visits during the first weeks; where time and circumstances permit, and with your consent, the student will be able to be with you during your labour and the birth of your baby.

I'm a happy and bubbly person who finds it easy to communicate with everyone, loves babies, pregnancy and am very conscientious regarding appointment times and maintaining communication.

As a student, I would need to attend at most 5 antenatal appointments, your birth and 5 postnatal appointments. If we have conflicting schedules then casual meetings are also acceptable to communicate the appointments.

I'm located in South Brisbane and looking for women all around Brisbane. Contact me regardless where you live and we can try to work something out.

Thanks for reading and hope you (or someone you know!) might be interested in helping out a student midwife!

Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne

My name is Karen. Are you pregnant and seeking a "Continuity of Care" Partnership with a midwife in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. I am a first year Monash undergrad and as part of my Nursing/Midwifery degree, it is a requirement for me to find pregnant women to follow through with during their pregnancy.

What does this involve? I will be an additional support for you during your pregnancy and for the first 6 weeks after bub's birth. I would be contactable on the phone for a chat, cuppa/lunch sessions, and would be able to attend obgyn appts, ultrasounds, childbirth education sessions, routine screenings and postnatal visits with you (and even the birth, if you would like me there). I aim to have maximum of 2 women being followed at any time, so I can devote as much of my time to attending your appointments in between lectures and my own child-wrestling. I am required to spend a minimum of 20 hours with you over the course of your pregnancy, birth and postnatally. Ideally we would meet while you are in the early stages of pregnancy (though the first meet can be up to 32 weeks) so we can get to know each other a little in order to build a rapport.

A little bit about me: I am a mature aged mum with 3 young boys aged 3, 6 and 10 and have decided to go back to uni full time to make our lives better. Having kids is a wonderful, hard, and sometimes daunting experience. cool.gif I have been where you are now! I have also lost two, identical twin boys due to TTS at 28 weeks, so I do understand the pain of losing babies as well. I would be extremely honoured if you allowed me to become a part of your journey as you prepare for your next (or subsequent steps) into motherhood.

If you (or someone you know) may be interested, please let me know and we can have a confidential chat. Thank you!

Karen

Hello!

My name is Sharie and I'm a registered nurse, currently undertaking my Post Graduate Diploma of Midwifery with Deakin University, Melbourne in partnership with Southern Health.

I'm required to complete five (5) Continuity of Care Experiences, or 'Follow-throughs'. This essentially means, following a pregnant woman (and their families) throughout the journey of their pregnancy, i.e. attending some antenatal appointments/classes, hopefully being present for labour and/or birth, and spending some time postnatally after the baby is born! A total of 10 hours contact is required for each follow through, but this can even be phone calls or chats afterwards if attending some appointments isn't an option.

I'm from Rowville in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, but I'm happy to travel to any locations surrounding. Also, if you are affiliated with another hospital organisation, that's fine too!

I look forward to being able to experience your wonderful journey with you and your families, as well as learning with you and offerring any additional support with the knowledge I'm gaining in my course.

Thanks original.gif

Hi ladies, I am a student midwife currently studying a postgraduate diploma in midwifery at Curtin University in Perth.
I am seeking pregnant women less than 35 weeks gestation who are interested in having a student join them on their journey! It is a great opportunity for the mum to have a friendly face and support throughout their antenatal visits and at the labour/birth, and an excellent learning opportunity for me to see this process from your perspective.
I am hoping to attend at least 2 antenatal appointments, the birth, and 2 postnatal appointments. I would love to attend more appointments if possible, but I will work to suit you. If you would prefer that I do not attend the birth or need to end the arrangement at any time, that is fine too original.gif . I am interested in a wide variety of mothers and birth plans, so if you would like to know more please PM me and I can send further info.
Bec
