Bob Brown always came across as a genuinely nice person. And in time like this we need voices like his to cut through the waffle that comes out of the average politican's mouth. You always knew where he stood, and that's a rare thing in todays political scene.

Tiny Hedgehog- not all Liberal politicians or supporters are rabid extreme right wingers. There is a broad range of ideals, ranging from the extreme right to the center. Which mirrors the ALP. Many Liberals would support gay marriage and an ETS- remember that's what lost Turnbull the job (and he only lost by one vote). Tony is not that popular.

I will stop calling Liberal voters the dumbest when they stop voting for hollow policies backed up by zero evidence and dodgy costings because Murdoch told them Bob Brown's going to take away their freedom.

I confess it was my first thought, too when I read he was resigning. I feel as shallow as a puddle when I realise that was my response to a major shift in Australian politics.

I'm not saying that Brown is not a caring, kind, good-hearted individual, who looks fantastic for his 67 years. Not at all, I think he's a wonderful man. away from politics.

I feel the Greens are unrealistic as a political party, and it makes me sick that so many people vote for them because it's the trendy thing to do. If you actually agree with what they stand for and think they'll be good as leaders, then fine, give them your vote. But if you're voting for them because it's the "cool, hip, newtown" thing to do, then you're a tool.

I can't say I'll miss him in a political sense. Hopefully he continues his great humanitarian and conservation works.

If a voter is socially progressive there are truly few options in terms of parties to vote for. Sometimes it's a matter of weighing up how important social policies are compared to environmental and economic.

You do if you're going to run into this thread accusing other people of being vacuous, ignorant or "trendy." Try stepping back for five minutes and really critically examining your own political biases and beliefs and where they came from. Easy test, answer this question: "Are the Coalition good with money?"

(Hint: The answer is "No." If you believe it is "Yes" I suggest reading up on some economists who aren't neoliberals.)

Was just providing for context of the mindset. I wouldn't get that wrapped up in slapfighting w/ someone who is coming from that sort of prism of view.

I am a pretty argumentative d*ck by nature and I'll take slaps at pretty much all Australian parties and both of the big two American parties for various behaviors and I've had interesting and educational debates with people from a lot of different political leanings, (I even learn stuff sometimes, it happens!) but there's a point of diminishing returns for argument, y'know?

Also, I have no problem with "non-whites" as suggested by the pricky one. Some of my closest friends are chinese, and a few are African too!! Suprised?

I think the Liberals need to watch how loudley they are crowing about the current 'implosion' of the ALP. If they win the next election they will have a very familiar looking problem... electable party with a leader who is incredibly unpopular with voters.
The Liberal party is winning in the polls - not Tony Abbott.

But that is not where this thread started.

So back to the issue at hand. What will the Greens look like post Bob Brown?

I hope that they remain a team based party and Senator Scott Ludlam becomes the deputy leader - he is a fantastic guy. I have met him quite a few times and he really does have the conviction of Bob.
