My doctor has suggested the nuvaring as an option for contraception. Has anyone used this? Do you have any feedback?

Hi there SDT I had it for a couple of years and it was by far the best contraception I used. I had very little in the way of side effects which was not the case for most others, it was longer term than the pill, I didn't have breakthrough bleeding and didn't find it uncomfortable. DH said he didn't really notice it during BD but you can also take it out for those occasions (just remember to put it back in).

I loved using nuvaring. Put it in and forget about it! I had more even moods etc than I did while on the pill.
Only thing I found bad was when I actually stopped using it (to get ready to TTC) my moods were AWFUL for a few months.
But actually being on the nuvaring was great.

Can I jump in this topic briefly and ask - is it a script that you get from the chemist? and also I saw someone say it was expensive - how expensive?

I used the nuvaring for a few months - it was super easy and I would have loved to have kept using it.

I don't want to put you off it, but it did make my hair fall out a bit. My GP thought that the hair loss could have been a result of stopping the oral pill (which I had been taking for many years), but when I stopped using nuvaring my hair loss stopped. I was really disappointed to stop using it though, and I might give it another go when I'm not baby making.

If I were you I would definitely give it a try.

For Markerr - My GP would write a script that I would take to the chemist. I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but I do remember thinking that one month of nuvaring cost as much as (or maybe more than) a box of the oral pill (with 3/4 months worth). This was a couple of years ago though.

I tried the nuvaring very very briefly. I was still BFing and my GP had said that it wouldn't affect my supply. But within 8 hours, my supply dropped dramatically. I can't tell you much else as I stopped using it within that first day as it was important to me to continue BFing. I only know of one other woman who has used it (no BFing involved in her case) and she tried it for a couple of months, felt yuck on it (hormonal mood changes and general feeling of PMS related stuff) and went back to the pill.

Also, in my case, I generally have difficulties with finding suitable contraception, and my friend tried it quite recently after the birth of her child so our experiences may be not the average experience. I'm all for contraception options, so now I've finished BFing I may actually try it again. Thanks for the prompt and I'll be keen to follow this thread.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm interested in hearing more about the cost, and the hairloss sounds a little concerning. Be great to hear any more experiences.

I loved the nuvaring, however I got headaches from it so had to stop.

It's around $70 for 3 rings (so 3 months worth). Can claim it back on your PHI
