I've just weaned off Motilium after being on it for 6 months and it most definitely was helping my supply.
I was taking 90mg per day. From my research, 60mg per day is the standard recommendation in Australia, while they prescribe up to 160mg per day in America for lactation (google Dr Jack Newman). You can have big jumps in supply from 60 to 90mg, and from 90 to 120mg. And yes, weight gain is a side effect for some (along with no periods, bad skin, the "blahs", headaches etc). ETA - And yes, weaning off slowly can minimise drop in supply. This post has been edited by OnTheJourney: 22/12/2012, 10:22 PM |

I had low supply (baby lost 12% of bodyweight by day 3) so we were breastfeeding, pumping and comping from then. Pumping only from 6 weeks when we finally admitted she just couldn't feed from the breast as she had a terrible sucking reflex and tongue tie that wasn't diagnosed until much later.
Motillium was a godsend for me. Fenugreek gave me the runs and absolutely no increase in supply Motillium however bumped my supply up another 50%. I maxed out at 600mls production a day solely pumping. I was on motilium and pumping up until 7 months when a bout of mastitis killed my supply and i didn't see the point of pumping for so many hours each day to get 100ml. Each time i tried to come of motillium my supply dropped off so i was on a maintenance dose. Motillium kept my baby on breastmilk from 2 weeks until 7 months meaning i only had to give bubs one formula bottle each day. I was lucky not to suffer any headaches from it. |

QUOTE 60mg per day is the standard recommendation in Australia I've seen 80 mg being prescribed in Australia, ie 2 tabs by 4 times a day. |

I was on 3 tablets a day for a week, 2 tablets for the next week and now I take 1 tablet daily. It hasn't increased my supply but I think it has probably maintained it somewhat.
My skin is like a teenagers and has been since I started the Motilium, can't say I will miss that side effect. I have been told that by my LC that I can only take it for 6 wks, which I thought was weird considering other people seem to stay on it for longer. They did tell me that if I needed it again later down the track I could have another course. I didn't really ask more info off my ob why he didn't think Motilium worked, I figured the LC probably knew more about. I have noticed that sometimes when I express I only get 60mls and other times I can get 120mls (from both breasts). This hasn't really changed since starting the second course. |

I was on 2x the recommended dose (under the supervision of a LC) along with blessed thistle and fenugreek as well as pumping after each feed. Once I stopped the Motilium, my supply drastically dwindled. I was on it for about 4 months, with no side effects. The vitamins helped a bit, but unfortunately for me, I had to switch to formula at 4 months.

I'm in QLD and Queensland Health recommends two tablets three times a day. My LC, however, happened to mention that in SA and VIC they recommend two tablets four times a day
GP has no problems prescribing it either. |

QUOTE I was on 3 tablets a day for a week, 2 tablets for the next week and now I take 1 tablet daily. It hasn't increased my supply but I think it has probably maintained it somewhat. I'm more familiar with the dosages suggested in this link to the Royal Womens Hospital in Melbourne. Much higher than you were taking, staying on the higher dosage for longer, there is quite a drawn out regime that is often prescribed. It was written 4 years ago. http://www.thewomens.org.au/Domperidonefor...reastmilksupply The link below has lots of information on domperidone and other prescription drugs for increasing supply (or trying to at least). http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/me...t_galactagogue/ |

I would also second that you can't just stop the tablets cold turkey. I was on 80mg a day and started decreasing at 4 months when we started solids (when I was also able to stop comp feeding). I dropped by one tablet every 2 weeks and it took that long for my supply to pick back up again. I eventually stopped tablets altogether at 11 months and stopped breast feeding at 15months
A lot of obstetricians don't seem to know a lot or care a lot about breast feeding. What ever you choose to do you have done a great job to pump for this long |
