Hi
I need some help, how can you tell if your child is teething or actually sick. For the last couple of days she has had a fever, runny nose, dribbling and extremely irratable. I am very lucky and normally have a very happy child, but the last couple of days have been terrible. She isn't sleeping, isn't interested in eating. We have given her Panadol and used the teething gel, and that seems to help for a short period of time and then she is crying her lungs out. I'm not sure if it's teething or she is sick? I'm thinking about calling a locum, but can 1 year olds be given anything besides baby Panadol? |

Poor bubba! Call a locum to be safe, but it sounds like teething. Lots of people say that baby Nurofen works a lot better for teething than baby Panadol, as it's an anti-inflammatory. I used it with DS when he was teething.

They can have Nurofen as well as panadol. I find the effects of nurofen last longer - especially if it is teething. Have you checked to see if you can feel any teeth? Probably wouldn't hurt to get bub checked over by a doc to make sure its not tonsalitis or something else. If the temp spiked very high then has not been so high it can be a sign of tonsalitis.

I think professional advice would be to check if your LO is unwell rather than assume she's teething. However I have given up going to the doc with colds - they can't do anything for it. Official advice I have seen usually states teething does not cause the things you described except dribbling.

Thank you so much for the advice, I can always count on EB! I'll go and get some Nurofen, if she isn't any better by tomorrow I'll call a locum.

Sounds like your little one is sick. I have been told by both a dentist and a GP that all teething causes is teeth. They said any symptoms when the child is teething is an illness and should be seen to by a doctor.

We decided to call the doctor and it turns out she has tonsillitis, she is now on antibiotics. I'll know for next time that teething doesn't cause all the other symptoms.
Thanks everyone. |
