Our current wifi router is attached to an old computer hidden away that is never turned on or used and we run a laptop, phones, tablet ect off the wifi. As the old computer is taking up room we would like to get rid of it but we dont want to attach the modem to our laptop as then we cant move it around.
Would a wifi router with built in modem mean then that we didnt have to have it connected to a computer and just to the phone line?? Any help would be appreciated. |

yep, that's what we do too - the wireless router/modem is plugged into the phone line and everything else operates wirelessly.

We have a wireless router with modem. It's about the size of a longer paper back book and sits under the couch, out of sight, near the phone point.
There are many to choose from, ours was about $129 at Officeworks for a router with long range, but they can be half that price. We run a tablet, couple of laptops, smart phones, a PS3 from it. |

Yep, it's what we do as well. Modem/Router sits in another room plugged into the phone socket. Computers are in every other room but that one!
I've got a Netgear. |

Our current wifi router is attached to an old computer hidden away that is never turned on or used and we run a laptop, phones, tablet ect off the wifi. I'm not quite sure what you mean here. Where is the 'modem' part? You don't need to 'physically' attach the wifi router (via a cable) to another computer for the wireless to work, so your current setup may be fine. Do you have the name and model of the router and modem? Would a wifi router with built in modem mean then that we didnt have to have it connected to a computer and just to the phone line?? Yes, but you may already have this?? After ours was fried by lightning, I did quite a bit of research and ended up getting a Billion 7700N for $56 (staticice) from MSY. I was going to get the 7800N, but it was $100 more and thought I may as well try the cheaper one, and it's been fantastic! Billion are highly recommended by those in the know. |

I was going to ask what blaast has.
How is your current router connected to the modem? Are you sure it isn't actually built in to the unit? If you have a separate modem then you still don't need the computer to run it (or laptop to physically connect to it) as you're using the wireless router. Just check what you've got first. I've got the Billion 7800N, I uhmmed and aahed about getting the 7700N instead of the 7800N but I liked the little bit extra the 7800N gave. The 7700N is a good choice though, and definitely worth it for the price. |
