My little girl is 8 months old pretty much exactly. She is meeting her developmental milestones, putting on weight (was 25th, now 50th percentile), and is enjoying food (we are BLW). She is breastfed.

She has pretty bad wind. As a newborn she had terrible wind pain and would curl up and cry during the evenings and fart constantly. Over the past 2 months it has been bad again. She now writhes when I am putting her to sleep (until she farts) and she often wakes from naps and sleeps specifically to fart. It seems to be associated with pretty bad tummy pain. She is waking pretty much every 1.5-2 hours at night and we are lucky to get 30min sleeps during the day. I know sleeping patterns change all the time but she wakes crying in pain and not to 'play' or happy. The times I have given her panadol or nurofen for teething has had no impact on the amount or type of windy pain she is in.

She is also teething (pretty much constantly - bottom two teeth are through), and has some nappy rash. She has also had a few colds. She has no other rashes or issues.

Does anyone have suggestions about what might be going on? I want to help her get rid of the wind if I can as she isn't getting enough sleep and is grumpy and overtired quite a lot. I am going to make a doctor's appointment but our dr is excellent and takes 3 weeks to get into, so is there anything I can investigate before we go?

Does your little girl burp OK?

I ask because my DS5 can't really burp at all - unless he is gagging (such as when the Dr puts a tongue depressor in his mouth). As a baby he was very windy (pain, crying and LOUD farts) and didn't burp well after a feed. A very 'spewy' baby.

Now at age 5 he still doesn't really burp 'properly', but my god he can lift the roof off! original.gif

Hi foxhill, yes she seems to burp ok! It definitely seems like a lower wind problem. She wasn't very spewy in the past either, and barely vomits at all now (maybe once a week)

You could try some gripe water? It worked wonders for Ethan who used to do the same thing...

You mentioned that she is teething, my little one is currently teething and I have noticed an increased in gas! So it could be related?

I have tried infants friends but it doesn't seem to help. I have also started bicycling her legs to try to move the air around, so hopefully that will work.

If you find a solution let us know! original.gif

The problems with farting and pain have started up in the last 2 months, since starting solids, so could it be related to the type of solids baby is having?
Is there a particular food that is bothering her intestine? Who know's what?
That's what crossed my mind. I would be good to see the GP and ? a Paed.

Maybe you can keep a food diary and see if there's any pattern of reacting to certain foods. I know as an adult certain foods make me gassy, so some babies probably experience the same. My breastfed baby was similar to yours as a newborn, and only improved after I stopped eating dairy. If I try eating yogurt or having a glass of milk, back comes the painful wind! I also noticed she reacts to potato - whether eaten by me or her. So perhaps there's some relation between your baby's wind and certain foods.

I too would be looking at the foods she's eating. It may be something you least expect.

As an infant my DD1 was very windy and at 2 months started refusing the breast. I tried cutting out the standard trigger foods but to no avail. After switching to formula her wind improved. Fast forward to her starting solids and every time she ate banana she would scream and scream until she passed wind. I had been eating weetbix & banana for breakfast every morning when breastfeeding her trying to be healthy, little did I know that was a trigger for her. So it could well be something that both you and her are ingesting.

Also, I swear by Brauer's Colic Relief. Within 10 mins that wind has passed and things are alot calmer. Worth a try!

Best of luck xox

Two months later and things are just as bad. Maybe worse. I have cut out wheat, dairy, caffeine and most sugar from my diet, I take probiotics, we see a Chiro twice a week, and have see various other health professionals.

Any new advice?
