I have a canon 550d which I love & am learning to use. I use it when I do shoots (no I'm not an amateur professional I simply do it as its my passion & would never dream of charging & only do family & very close friends for practice) but I also use it for those everyday life shots. I always shoot in RAW & am now wondering if there is a better way of doing things & if I'm taking up too much memory on the computer & overusing RAW IYKWIM. Should I either get a little point & shoot for those everyday shots you want to keep but wont edit or should I change my camera settings & not shoot RAW. Also should I export the everyday ones I already have & make them jpeg & delete the raw images? What do you do? Any help would be great, thanks

I keep my Canon 450D in my handbag and it is set to JPEG. If there's an image that I think I could want to process and put on the wall, I would change it to RAW. But generally just shoot in JPEG as I don't want to process it. I even use the iphone a lot. Great for snaps.

As a strictly non-professional I either take my Canon 600D if I know I want to take some good pictures to save and use. If you don't want to take as much computer space you could always use a JPEG setting for snaps or get your self a separate hard drive just for pictures.

For 'happy snaps' I just use my iphone

I have my Canon 500d set to jpgs most of the time for photos, I never do anything that needs raw, large jpgs is enough to get big prints. I also just my iphone a lot ph34r.gif

I use either my 7D or the iphone. I will be selling my IXUS p&s when I get around to it as it just doesn't get used anymore. I also shoot everything in RAW and my feeling is that if you are already shooting RAW don't switch back to jpeg. I wouldn't delete the RAW file either just in case you want to go back at a later date and process it differently. I store all mine on an external hard drive.

We have a Nikon P&S for every day photos but most of the time I use my iPhone also for those little snaps that happen during the day. I tend to only take my DSLR to special occasions as I like to enjoy myself rather than be behind the camera.

Thank you all for your replies. I will be getting an iPhone when my plan runs out at the end of this year & may start using that. I think I will go to big jpegs & use my camera more for special occasions. I also have an external hard drive but with the amount of photos I take in a year it wont be long before its full! Thanks again ladies biggrin.gif

For that vast majority of "snapshots" that I know I never want to do anything "major" with, I convert them from RAW to JPEG on your computer and only store them as the smaller JPEG file.

ETA - I forgot to mention, I use my D90 for most shots. I also carry a Canon S95 (great little camera) in my handbag, in case. My iPhone gets a few snaps for me too.

I set to jpg and raw for all photos, then I just deleted the RAW ones that I don't have any plans to edit, takes a few mins but alos give me that option if I change my mind once they are uploaded IYKWIM?

remember: too much ego will kill your talent
I have a 5d m2 and a 40d and I'm a pro, but for 99.9% of my family happy snaps I use my iPhone 4s lol

It's just so much easier and when Im not working the last thing I want to do is sit there editing heaps of unnessissary raw files. Occasionally I'll bring out the big guns to take some 'nice' shots of my kids but most of the time the convenience of the iPhone wins over dragging out the DSLR.
