I am trying to find a great read for a friend who loves biography's, ideally it would be about a strong woman or someone that has had an interesting life, not just a 'celebrity'.

I dont usually read these types of books, so I am clueless.

I loved "Hospital by the River". It's about an unknown Australian Doctor Catherine Hamlin and her husband who went to Africa on a whim to help women give birth and train midwives. They ended up staying there till he passed away, and she's still there performing surgery at the age of 90, having set up their own foundation to repair fistulas. It's a fabulous, awe inspiring story about a humble Australian lady.

Many years ago I read the biography of Katharine Graham's life. Her family ran the Washington Post and she oversaw it for nearly 20 years I think. She was at the helm during the Watergate Scandal. Her intimate involvement with the paper and therefore the journalists breaking this scandal made fascinating reading.

It was a great book, she led a remarkable life and was acquainted with some very powerful, interesting people.

I can't remember the title of it but it shouldn't be too difficult to track down.

I also read the biography of Amy Johnson. She was one of the first female pilots in England. That was a great read too.

I recently read Shania Twain's autobio - it was really interesting and her life was completely NOT what I expected.

I'm currently reading Little Daughter by Zoya Phan. I am about a quarter of the way through - but so far has been a good read (happy early childhood). I think it's about to hit tragic though sad.gif

The Road to Coorain is a really good autobiography of an Australian Historian, Jill Ker Conway.

Daughter of Persia is the autobiography of Sattareh Farman Farmaian, a prince's daughter who set up social work in Iran and was eventually forced out by the revolution in 1979.

The Hiding Place is is Corrie ten Boom's account of her family's involvement in the resistance/underground in Holland in WW2, including her time in a concentration camp when they were caught.

Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali

It's an amazing story of survival by a Muslim woman who suffered genital mutilation and hideous oppression at the hands of her family, its seriously unbelievable and incredibly inspirational.
