Our DD who has just turned 3 has been day toilet trained since just before 2 and out of night nappies for about 6 months. The last few weeks she has been having the occasional accident overnight (twice was a poo accident, but mostly wees). Not good. She also has a tendency to wonder into our bed in the middle of the night and prefers to sleep on me, rather than next to me. Really not good, especially when I woke in her puddle last night! We have tried to put her into a nappy or pull ups but she was rather insulted by this suggestion and promptly let us know by launching into a full scale tantrum - yes she is quite independent in that regard.

I am going into hospital this week for surgery and will be away for about 5 nights. My husband and nanny will be at home and I am quite anxious how she is going to cope. She does know what is about to happen. I travel for work often so I don't think she is worried about me going away, but rather that I am going to hospital and will be "sore" when I come home. I have explained that she will not be able to come in our bed for a while (I am having a hip replacement).

I am wondering if this anxiety is normal for a 3 year old and leading to the bedwetting, or whether it is just a normal phase. We also have a 5 year, but I can't remember anything like this with her.

My son is 4.5 and stopped wearing night nappies at age 3. During that time we have had many periods where he has wet the bed (only once in our bed, thankfully!). He will wet every night for a couple of weeks and then stop and be dry for weeks on end. I don't think it is stress related.

I find the best way to deal with it just to be very prepared so you can be quick and efficient when the accidents happen. We use brolly sheets, which are great, and always have a spare doona and pillow ready to go in the cupboard, so the bed can be changed very quickly.

We've had very few accidents in the past couple of months.

Good luck with the surgery.

I will probably think of something witty to say later.
I would also say it sounds normal enough. rose7 has some good suggestions. DS also responded to a game DH played with him in which DS had to come into the room pretending it was night time and DH would pretend to be asleep and he would get different ham-acted responses depending on how he proceeded. DS thought it was hilarious but he also got the message and at night time now he just creeps in and lies down without disturbing anyone.
