hi,

I just recently posted a topic about my Janome 419s sewing machine and how id like to find a stitch which could be used instead of an overlocker.

Can anyone recommend some different seams e.g. french or flat fell which might be useful in keeping garments together especially ones which my sons would wear? and also ones for babies clothing as most material would be light weight this time of year.

Thanks

before my mum got an overlocker she used to zig zag the seams then put a normal straight stitch this is all in the inside though.

Depends on the fabric.

If it's sheer, really lightweight or frays a lot, I will do a french seam.

For most fabrics, I find zig zag works well.

I have got into the habit of using bias binding around a lot of arm hole seams. Very easy, finishes it off nicely.

Yes I second the french and bias tips, I love using bias and often grab a few meters of nice fabric with tiny designs to make my own, I also use it on hems for DDs skirts or any dress I sell, it is a pretty way to finish off I think
