Hi,
I'm due in July and looking into cloth nappies, I have read some good reviews of Real Nappies and I just wanted to get some advice from real mums on them?
Has anybody used these, if so how have u found them?Also curious how many would be best to purchase for a newborn? Also do you know if you can use other brands of waterproof covers over the real nappies liners?

I haven't used them but it looks like a simple system of cotton prefolds and PUL covers..... so yes you'd be able to use other covers with their inserts and use their inserts with other covers also.

I'd be reluctant to buy a whole pack though, cotton isn't the most absorbent of nappy fabrics and you may find over time that it doesn't cut it. Bamboo, hemp and microfibre are all more abosrbent options. You may also find prefolds fiddly - I did - I needed cloth nappies to be as easy as possible so I wouldn't pick up a disposable instead and so I ended up using mainly all-in-ones or pocket nappies and the 24 prefolds I purchased before baby was born were mainly used as spew-rags and the like so it was a bit of a waste!

If I had my time over and was cloth nappying a newborn I'd buy some bamboo prefolds, maybe some cotton ones also, some covers and a few easier to use options for going out or for when other people are doing nappy changes especially. A mix of brands is best because it's not until your baby is here that you know what styles/brands will fit and what won't!

ETA: Actually if I really had my time over again (and unlimited cash) I'd just buy a full stash of sized AIOs and pockets. I hated prefolds, fitteds and covers, even OSFM nappies didn't really work for us. Buying second hand is a good way to try the more expensive styles without spending way too much cash also.

I bought the newborn back and some extra bits and pieces for DS.

Sorry to say but they were useless, since he was a premmie they didn't fit until he was three months and he just peed straight through, even using additional liners I had bought and once it was all on, they were very bulky.

They were very simply to fold and put on, but the covers have a folded section that the padding goes into which wouldn't work with other covers as far as I know.

I also bought some terry towling handmade nappied from ebay and these were better but still not great and I used fluffies covers with them.

My advice is to buy a range of nappies to try in the trading room and see what you like using or will suit your baby. Another good option is some sunbaby cheapie pockets with the microfibre insert. I think I bought a dozen for around $60. They are quite good and have great reviews and if you hate the microfibre inserts you can stuff them with anything. I stuff mine with Booroi bamboo prefolds.

Also you may find cloth nappying with a newborn a bit of a trial. In the first 6-8 weeks I was changing DS around 8-10 times in 24 hrs. I used disposables as I wouldn't have kept up with the washing and drying. Depending on where you are you might also be able to use a nappy wash service for the first 12 weeks. This is what I did for my 2 DDs but the company no longer provides the service. Terry squares or prefolds with a snappy and pul cover work best for newborns because of the high number of changes. They are also easier to dry. Pockets are good for easy laundering as well.

As PPs have said, I would hesitate to buy a 'system' before I had tried a few different types of nappy.

I use the chinese cheapies off ebay (around $6 each) with no dramas, was only a $120 investment and Ive found them great.
