DS is 6 months and 3 weeks and he is not sitting up unaided or crawling just yet but I am trying to give him the best start by heaps of tummy time well until he get frustrated and then he either rolls over or need my help.

He is doing baby push up and sustaining his upper body with his arms but I am not sure what signs to look for, any pointers?

TIA

Lurking...

Our DS's are the same age OP

Mine rolls, does fantastic push ups & can sit unaided for about 20 secs before losing balance. Can stand unassisted also holding into furniture.

In last week or two, he has started gaining mobility by using arms to rotate 360 degrees. He is also starting to push with his knees and lifting his bum. I'm not sure if this suggests crawling is imminent or not??

DS started lifting himself up into the crawling position but never moved. He did this for awhile then started doing a commando crawl on his belly and is now crawling 'normal'.

He didn't start crawling normal until 12months.

Honestly after 3 kids they will do it in their own time.

My kids sat between 5m-8.5m of age.

Commando crawling at 7-9m of age

All 4pt crawling at 10.5m of age (DD skipped Commando crawling and went straight to 4pt crawling at 10.5m of age, but hadn't done any crawling before that).

Walking was 16.5m-19.5m for my children.

It is not a race.

I found that learning to sit was better for my children and they went to 4pt crawling from a sitting position (which you had placed them in).

The later they crawl, the easier it is on you! Some babies roll around he room as well(my nephew used to do that. She'd put him down, leave the room get back to find he'd rolled somewhere else, or under the couch lol).

My daughter used to get on hands and knees and rock back and forth, not sure how long it took her to crawl, I'm not great at keeping track of that. They'll get it when they are ready. and as a PP said, it's not a race or a competition. She was sitting unaided at 6 or so months, but wasn't walking by herself outside until 17 months. Cruised inside from 9 or 10 months though.

I DID spend time showing her how to sit down once she could pull herself to stand, she'd get frustrated and yell till she learnt how to sit on her bottom when her legs were tired.

Agree. DD1 crawled at 9 months. No real signs.. just took off one day.
DD2 13 months. Rocking on all fours for a few months.
DD3- started rocking at 8 months but didn't crawl till 12 months.

They do it in their own time and there is not much you can do to encourage it. And don't be in a hurry for crawling.. it's soooo much easier when they stay put in the one place. Once they are on the move it's a whole new ball game. I missed the days when they couldn't crawl/run away from me and get into eveything.

Never forget who you are, little star
It's good to read this thread! DS is 11+ months and is still not crawling.

However, he has progressed over the past couple of months from:
- sitting unaided to shuffling in a circle on his bottom to
- shuffling around in a circle on his tummy with his upper body raised off the floor to
- raising himself onto his hands and knees only to have his knees shoot out from under him causing him to go backwards (quite amusing for us but frustrating for him!) to
- leaning forward from sitting and putting his hands on the floor in front of him to
- rising up on two arms and one knee with the other leg folded on the floor under him to
- shuffling forwards in this position and rocking on his hands and knees.

I would say he is just about ready to take off!

DS was sitting a couple of weeks before he started crawling.

He didnt do any of the crab/commando movements, nor go backwards. He literally just started crawling one day.

Oh, it was about 2-3 weeks ago so around 7 1/2 months and I didnt do anything special to encourage it!

There's no real signs IMO. my DD2 was getting up on all fours and rocking at 4 months and still didn't crawl until around 8 months. Just keep watching him, give him floor time (tummy and back) and he will work out how to move around ... it's lovely watching them develop at this stage and they can do it so quick! DD3 was pushing her arm up under her last week like she was trying to push herself up to sit and within 24 hours she had mastered it and can now get from tummy to sitting by herself and sit unaided (she still falls over after sitting for a bit but she is getting steadier by the day). If you had of asked me if she had been sitting 2 weeks ago now I would have said "No way". They are amazing!!
