I have just started a new business, which sells alternative clothing and homewares. (PM me if you would like a link!)

Just wondering, can anyone recommend someone for web design, and whats an average price? Having just started, I don't have too much to spend!! Also, can anyone recommend packaging supplies, book keeping advice? What about information regarding business loans or grants?

Thanks so much!

Are you after someone to design a website for you? Or are you after a web developer to upload a website for you? Two different things.

I'll PM you.

There are a few book keepers on EB so hopefully they can assist you with this side.

You can get the tax office to come to your business and sit down with you and help you sort yourself out regarding income tax, record keeping and GST. Here is the link to tell you about them (they're free!):

http://www.ato.gov.au/businesses/content.a...p;page=3&H3

What kind of record keeping software you use depends on your needs. You can use an invoice book, an excel spreadsheet, or get something like MYOB. Depends on your level of transactions.

People like tradies generally use invoice books (maybe a couple jobs a week - large money), if you're intending on doing lots of smaller transactions you could use an excel spreadsheet (or similar) or you could get something like MYOB. If you're getting employees I would recommend MYOB.

If you're going spreadsheet it doesn't need to be terribly complicated. Have a column for date, amount, GST (if applicable) then have totals down the bottom. Have a similar spreadsheet for expenses. Do a new one each financial year - or if you're GST registered, do one each GST period. They will give you your total income, total expenses and GST.

Be aware that it is a legal requirement to issue an invoice if the total sale is greater than $75 (or $82.50 GST inclusive). MYOB is handy in that it can generate invoices for you. Receipt books will also have carbon copy paper. If you're going excel, just have a template invoice and enter it as needed (save each invoice).
