Some of the books that my 10 yo DD has recently enjoyed:

Pony Club Rivals series by Stacy Gregg
Hunger Games trilogy
Cherub series by Robert Muchamore (she is crazy for these but they have some quite grown-up themes - terrorism, drug dealing)
Millicent Min Girl Genius and others by Lisa Yee
Two Weeks in Grade Six by Anna & Mary Pershall
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken (I loved this myself at that age!)
From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler (ditto!) by E. L Konigsburg
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Eleven etc series by Lauren Myracle
Secret Horse trilogy by Jane Smiley
Scat by Carl Hiaasen
Charmed Life (Chrestomanci Series) by Diana Wynne Jones

Always on the search for new books, I can highly recommend the following based on the number of times my 9 year old has re-read them! I've omitted ones already mentions (or tried to)

These possibly easier to read, and/or shorter books:
The Magic Shop books by Bruce Coville - Colville?
Our Australian Girl series - she doesn't usually go for the "Old books" but these are a new series set in historical Aus. Next year Sally Rippin will be one of the authors.
EJ 12
The Mandie Mysteries/Adventures - Lois Gladys Leppard
THe Boxcar Mysteries
Freaky Families - Jackie French

Slightly longer/older books
THe Phantom Tollbooth
THe Invention of Hugo Cabret
Wonder (already mentioned, but it's *really* good)
Matilda - or anything else by Raold Dahl
Molly Moon Series
Nanny Piggins Series
The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch

Recomended by a slightly older friend, but DD hasn't read them yet:
Trixie Belden mysteries
Eva Ibbotson books
Flitterwig by E. Cullen

I'm reading Divergent - I love it, but there's a lot of violence, so I might wait a few years for DD.
I also loved Watership Down in Fifth Grade,
and the Wrinkle in Time Books when I was a girl.

Magician by Raymond E Feist (and the other two in the series)

Other two? You need to update your list:
Magician; Silverthorn; A Darkness at Sethanon; Daughter of the Empire; Prince of the Blood; Servant of the Empire; Mistress of the Empire; The Kings Buccaneer; Shadow of a Dark Queen; Rise of a Merchant Prince; Rage of a Demon King; Shards of a Broken Crown; Krondor the Betrayal; Krondor the Assassins; Krondor Tear of the Gods; Honoured Enemy; Murder in LaMut; Talon of the Silver Hawk; Jimmy the Hand; King of Foxes; Exiles Return; Flight of the Nighthawks; Into a Dark Realm; Wrath of a Mad God; Rides a Dread Legion; At the Gates of Darkness; A Kingdom Besieged; A Crown Imperiled

And two more scheduled soon:
Magicians End; Jimmy and the Crawler

And don't miss out on Faerie Tale, although there are horror and adult elements so it's a little more mature. Brilliant story though.

Great topic, thank you so much to other posters biggrin.gif

Was also going to mention The Keepers series by Lian Tanner (Australian) - my DD is hanging out for book 3 to be released hopefully soon. Book 1: Museum of Thieves, Book 2: City of Lies, and she wants to dress as the main character for book week this year.

She also really enjoyed Northwood by Brian Falkner, released around a year ago I think.

I usually subscribe to a couple of bookshop newsletters so helps to keep track of what's coming out for kids - a lot of the upper primary or YA ranges are great reading for adults as well (eg. Hunger Games series, though personally I wouldn't think they're appropriate for younger children).

I am currently reading Phillip Pullman Northern Lights series and enjoying it immensely (ok I know this post is meant to be what your KIDS are reading, but it's an intriguing storyline - will pass them onto my kids when I'm good and ready!).

Michael Morpurgo (sp?) - War Horse and heaps of other books. *Sigh* there are just so many and not enough time to read them all...

Maybe slightly off topic but I used to LOVE reading the Sherlock Holmes books in early secondary. Still love reading them now...

There are also branches to other series now, like Young Sherlock Holmes.
