Just after some advice thanks.

We got a new car today (thursday) and we went for a little drive in it so i could get used to and ds just chucked the biggest tantrum and was crying nearly like he was scared.

It took him about 10 mins to calm down he is still in his car seat from the other car.

I am guessing he is unsure of the new car.

So please does anyone have any tips on how to settle him into the new car i would love to hear them.

Ds is 30 months.

It might smell funny, whether brand new or new-to-you; his seating position might be 'wrong' compared to what he is used to, so he can't see properly, or can see too much. It could be any number of things, not just what I can think of.

Can you ask him why he doesn't like it?

If not, I'd suggest trial and error - buy a favourite takeaway (chicken and chips will really change the smell, and would convince my two of anything lol). Add some favourite toys or games in the car. Play kid CDs and sing along. Sit in the car without the engine on, not going anywhere, and have a chat about what you can see out of the windows - in your driveway, even.

Good luck. Hopefully, he will just be uncertain about it rather than terrified, and a bit of reassurance will help settle him.

New car smell can be quite disturbing on the nose and can give people headaches, and I am one of those people who dislike new car smell and get headaches and at worst migraines. I would buy a car deodouriser and try get that new car smell out as soon as possible. Perhaps drive with the windows down so that he can feel less claustrophobic with the smell.

I hope he settles down and that this will pass.

At 2.5 I find I have to give 'warnings' and explain everything. Kids that age are creatures of habit, and anything new is 'scary'. He doesn't get why you have a new car, why it looks and smells different, or what happened to the old one. Just start talking to him about it, explain thy you have it, why, and why it might be fun. Then let him have a little look at it while it's parked, on his own terms. And the next time you need to take him out, explain where you'll be going, but that you'll be going in the new car - and start explaining that half and hour before you are due to go. He'll be fine.
