My 8 year olds do acrobatics and netball at the moment. As per PP they love rollerskating too. Our local rink has casual lessons on a Sunday morning for all ages followed by free admission to the 10-12 skate session, so they go and do that occasionally.

QUOTE Since the Olympics started, she has been asking to do Gymnastics as well biggrin.gif I reckon there will be a big influx in gymnastic lesson inquiries. It's the age of trying to do the splits, twirling on monkey bars, handstands and bendbacks isn't it....the Olympics will fire them up |

My 8 year old does swimming all year round, netball in winter, and Nippers and Swim Club in summer. She tried Little A's last year, wasnt really into it, but she may do it again this year.

Cricket is also a great sport for girls, our area has a girls comp and they have reduced rego fees, gala days, workshops with Aussies womens cricket teams all as a means to try to get more girls to play.

Personally I'm a huge fan of basketball for kids - I love that girls or boys can play, it's fun, exciting, developmental (ball skills, coordination, fitness) and a great team sport. Plus anyone can play anywhere on the court and score for their team - hence gaining a huge sense of achievement for themselves and that they've contributed to their team. Also you're typically in and out inside of an hour on game day!!! (Not too much 'hanging around' like, say, little aths... with the qualifier that I do love little aths too, especially for 'all rounders', but it makes for a long morning down at the track every weekend!).
Your DD would be the perfect age to start basketball or pretty much any other offence/defence ball game. Check out what's available in your area so that you don't have to travel too far! Personally I also like sports that they can continue to play, either at competitive or recreational level, right through their teen years to adulthood. Your DD would no doubt have some skills from gymnastics that would assist her in another sport (fitness, strength, agility/coordination), but at their age it's also about fun and participation, and meeting new friends. Good luck! |
