I've recently been put on the Fodmap diet by my doctor to help determine what is setting off my tummy aches. Has anyone else used this approach and how have you found it ? Did it help narrow down what foods you needed to avoid ? How long did it take to work it all out for you ?

Technically I am on the fodmap diet. I had a breath test to test for fructose intolerance that came back positive. But I am okay with lactose.

Can I suggest that you get the breath tests done? Then see a dietitian that specialises in this area. Both shepherd works and diet solutions (major researchers in this area) do Skype appointments.

I am at the point of reintroducing foods and testing what my tolerance levels, if any, are. It has been very beneficial for me and my dd, who we suspect is also intolerant but is too young to do the test. bloating gone, burping when I eat gone, constipation gone, more energy, happier (a symptom for me was depression like feeling). But the diet is hard. Everything seems to have onion or garlic in it. And what toucan and cannot have is changing all the time as they learn and test more foods.

It took a good three weeks or so for the benefits to show. I wouldn't go back now!

Have you ruled out gluten intolerance and celliacs?

Good luck.

Unfortunately no one in WA does the breath tests that my doctor has been able to find. I'm on week 4 of the fodmap diet and also finding the onion and garlic the hardest to avoid. It's relatively easy to avoid gluten and lactose by comparasion but onion flavour seems to be in lots of foods. And cooking without stock etc is very tricky sad.gif

I've previously had the blood test for coeliacs as well as a colonoscopy to rule out bowel cancer, abdominal ultrasounds and an x-ray.

Before the diet the only food I knew that I had a problem with was apples.

My only symptom previously was tummy aches but I have noticed I generally feel much better on the diet than I did before.

What foods did you reintroduce first and in what quantities ?

Hi there,

I'm not on the Fodmap diet yet, but eat according to IbS restrictions, and have cut out a lot of the foods on Fodmap list. I'm still waiting for some tests - pregnant, so it's a bit hard!
I really don't think it's coeliacs, the blood test was negative but the want to do a biopsy. I do have trouble with lactose, and possibly the milk proteins too.

So I can't eat any insoluble fibre, apart from small amount after eating a buffer food that is high in soluble fibre. I make my own bread now, white with lots of linseed meal and chia seeds, and the has helped a lot. I find the gas producing foods a terrible problem, so am voiding where I can, but haven't made the leap to cut them out completely.... I'm too worried about my nutrition if I have to cut out even more foods.

So I will be watching the thread, post anything about your journey! I'm also checking out the web link as the hospital dietician seems to be clueless!

I have been following this diet since April and slowly eating a little more food, I still suffer bloating a little but not as bad as what it used to be and eat 100% clean. I have dedicated a lot of my time to my blog all about fodmap recipes, gluten, dairy, lactose, sugar free too and clean recipes. My blog is www.mycleanplate.wordpress.com
