Thanks all that is fantastic ! We will definitely go ahead with it ... previously I'd read some people say it wasn't worth it etc which I found hard to believe.
Will have a look at whirlpool today. I love that site, don't know why I didn't go there earlier ! I'd been looking at a 5kW system which now I think is too big .. will look around 3kW based on your recommendations. A bit cheaper too !! |

I think you'll find that the people who say it wasn't worth it were those that put in a system that is too small for their needs. When you have solar, your rate to buy electricity (i.e. when you're using power from the grid, rather than your solar system) is higher than the regular rate. I think in Vic it's around 33 cents.
So, if you put an undersized unit in, then the cost to buy the power to cover your shortfall will outweigh the money you're saving when your using your own power. I've even heard of some people that were "sold" small systems by some of the big companies that advertise great prices that have ended up with bigger power bills than before. Our friend is a solar designer/installer, and installers are supposed to give you a full analysis of your circumstances which should take into account your usage, your house orientation, any obstacles that may create shade etc. so that you get the right system for your home. Also, in Vic, the feed in tarrif is no longer 68 cents, it is now approx 25 cents per kw, which is guaranteed until 2016. |
