I've been prescribed Maxolon every 8 hours for rather severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. I've found that I am suffering from some listed side effects - namely restlessness, edginess and a bit of insomnia. So I'm exhausted but on edge, it feels horrid. The Maxolon is only doing so much so if this doesn't pass I'm thinking of admitting defeat and asking for Zofran from my OB next week.
So, did anyone have these side effects for the first days and then they passed? |

They probably won't, sorry
Ondancetron (zofran) is heaps better But if you need to sleep- try taking phenergan (ask the chemist) on days I felt the worst (with Hannah, couldn't do it with Jack, or this one) I'd take a half dose of phenergan and the nausea would stop and it'd make me sleepy too, which also helps. My hyperemesis is always worse when tired. This post has been edited by tinkster23: 10/02/2012, 06:09 PM |

HMMM, never heard of it causing edginess or moodiness before. Usually maxolon makes you feel tired also. Maybe discuss it with your Ob when you see him next as its sounds as though its not really doing its job.
Good Luck I hope you feel better soon. |

Get something else!
I have those side effects and the longer I take it the worse they get. And stematoll is the same. My heart would race and it started to become dangerous. I even put those drugs down as allergies now as I could not stand he side effects. There are other drugs you can take like ondansatron and phenergeon. Go and talk to your doctor about what else there is. |

They probably won't, sorry Bugger! Thanks, I'll persist for a few more days anyway as I'm not at the OB 'till Thurs and I cannot go back to not taking anything. Phenergan helped to a certain extent, gave me good sleep but sedated me too much for day use and unfortunately my daytime vomits would override the Phenergan by 7am. I've had the exact same side effects after taking Maxalon and have refused to take it ever since. It's such a horrible feeling so I really feel for you. Ask the Doctor if he can possibly prescribe something else for your nausea.
Take care and I hope you feel better soon. |

I didn't find Maxolon particularly helpful with morning sickness unfortunately. My OB doesn't recommend it, in his experience in can leave you in a "fog of nausea" not vomiting but feeling awful. I have found Zofran helps but it's not magical, I'm still vomiting but less than I was and usually feeling better, at least until early evening.
Good luck, MS is horrible. |

Hi OP,
Normally resist giving medical advice on EB but I'm a doctor and also suffer exactly the same side effects from maxalon and stemetil as you're describing. They're shocking i know, you'll probably find you feel much better when the maxalon is out of your system,. They certainly won't go away with time. Maxalon's not that great for morning sickness. hyperemesisis anyway, any chance you could get in with a GP tomorrow and try something else such as Zofran? Even phenergan or Restavit (doxylamine) both available over the counter, although they both really bomb you out unfortunately. Morning sickness is a b**ch! |

Thanks outdoorgirl84, I'm glad I'm not imagining it at least! I have some Restavit in the cupboard, and Phenergan so I think I'll ditch the Maxolon from now on and take one of them instead tonight. I like their night effects, no night-time nausea and I sleep well! But I really found that even half a Restavit in the morning made me soooo dopey. At the moment, I'm not making it to work anyway so may as well re-try some things over the weekend. I don't know why I'm hesitating about Zofran, I'm pro-meds when needed as the above shows. Maybe I am worried that it won't be the magic that I desperately want. Or that it seems ore extreme. Not sure. I'll stop with the Maxolon though, this feeling is just wrong. |

I had no side effects from Maxalon to start with. I was given Maxalon plus stemetol with 1st pregnacy but they did not help at all with nausea. I was unfortunate enough to have hyperemesis so spent over 3 months extremely ill unable to get of bed except to be hydrated via drips in hospital and to vomit 10+ times a day.
With my 2nd pregnancy, hyperemesis again, I was again prescribed Maxalon and Stemetol. 3 days after starting taking the Maxalon by itself I had some sort of fit, can't recall what they called it. Started with not being able to stop grinding my teeth, very sore neck then could not stop my head and eyes rolling back constantly. Went to local ER, they injected me with somthing to try counter act the maxalon, made it worse. Was transfered by ambulance to RPA and given more drugs, after about an hour there it slowly started getting better. I was told that it had been a built up reaction to Maxalon. I was then finally given a script for Zofran which did help a lot more than anything previously given but I had very bad hyperemesis so was still bed ridden for months. Zofran (Ondancetron sp?) is very expensive but I would definately take that over any other anti nausea meds. I will never again take Maxalon, it was an incredibly horible experience, especially being pregnant at the time. |
