I am organising 4 yr old party with pirate theme. I was thinking of kitting out all the guests with pirate hat, eye patch and making cardboard swords with tin foil wrapped around one end as the blade. Is the sword inappropriate for a 4 yr old? I would imagine the kids would use it in imaginative play and I am not sure if I like this idea. I have been known to be a little "over-reactive" before so I just want to get the general vibe from anyone out there.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, however I have two older boys (5 & 6). When Ds1 was 4, I might of not liked it so much (he was a full on child).
I would assume that a pirate party included sword Don't forget 'treasure'. Make/buy little fabric bags and fill with chocolate gold/coins Pin the parrot on the pirate? |

DS had a pirate day at preschool when he was 3, and nearly all the kids had swords (including DS). not an issue here

I'd not be thrilled but try and be nice and suck it up. I don't like kids using pretend weapons in their play.

I did exactly this for DS's 3rd birthday and all kids and parents loved it. I used toilet roll/kitchen roll cylinders painted black as the handle, then covered the 'blade' with foil'. I put each gues's name in large letters on each sword to save fights over whose was whose! we got a big bag of plastic gold coins from spotlight and had a treasure hunt too. The kids loved the whole thing.

OP, you could always just draw a feather on it, and make it a 'feather sword'

Sounds like fun to me too! But then I'm one of those bad parents who lets DD play with toy guns as well. Playing Cowboys & Indians/Pirates/Numerous other nasties never turned me into a mass murderer
