Hi, My DS is almost 3 and has had a bad cough, DH took him to the doctor yesterday and he asked to have a chest x-ray taken. He has some kind of infection on his left lung and has to be on a course of antibiotics, taken 3 times a day.
DS is not keen on taking it at all, and he has to have it 3 times a day. I have been using a nurofen syringe tube as it seems abit easier. I have explained to him that the doctor says it really important to take it, as it will make youre nasty cough better. Just wondering does anyone have any suggestions or experiences on how to administer it easier? |

No explanation is necessary at that age, he needs to do it and there is no way about it. Perhaps offer him a gummy bear/small treat after the medication if he takes it with no fuss.
I find doing the hard and fast way is best and if you need to pry his mouth open so be it. We all have to do what we don't like and perhaps this is a teachable moment for him. |

Is it liquid? My dad was great at making "medicine milkshakes" when I was little.

I second giving him a gummy bear or similar if he takes it without fuss. We did that when DS needed eye drops which he hated.

Thanks for youre replies, yes I know its very important that he takes it. This morning I had to force it in his mouth with a struggle and squirt it in, he had most of it.
Today I bought some smarties, so tonight will try that as a treat to try and encourage him to take it. |
