sick of CHAOS? then FLY...
the only stain remover I've ever found to work is item/stain wet in cold water and scrubbed with a nail brush with dish liq (we happen to use EcoStore dish liq). Then let it sit then wash as usual. If it's delicate fabric of course take care or spot check or whatever but generally I scrub 'with the grain' and that does it.
I was quite surprised actually how much STUFF it DID get out.

I bought a bottle of eco friendly detergent and put that in a spray bottle with a bit of water and I use that to spray on stains and let it sit a while before I wash it. I wash with soap nuts and use washing soda as a booster in my whites loads - they all work just as well as your expensive commercial cleaners.

I second using dishwashing liquid for grease stains. I use earth choice.

I like the idea of putting it in a spray bottle diluted in water and using it as a general prewash stain remover, that's a great tip. But I would use it neat on a real grease stain, to make sure.

The Cinderella brand of eco cleaning products has a Stain Remover which is suitable for using on clothes, furniture and carpets. I've had great results with it.
