My 9 month old bub jumps and then cries at sudden loud noises such as aa loud sneeze (husband does this a lot)' he's getting b enter with the sudden noises though. He does 't like the vacuum cleaner or the stick blender I use for his food and cries when they are being used.

My 12 week old really only startles if I blow my nose (grr, hayfever) or talk suddenly while he's snoozing on my chest.

I work(ed) at a cafe so he is used to the sound of coffee machines, register pings, food processors, blenders and general rabble.. so now each time I go back I can park him right by the register/kitchen and he sleeps like the dead - I guess the grinder and psssssshh of the coffee machine is his white noise.

The vacuum noise must be similar because I can have him in his bouncy chair asleep and can vacuum around him with no problems.

Also, he's fine with dog noise considering I have 2, my sister has 2, and my parents have 3 (Christmas with 7 dogs is always fun.)

Up until recent weeks, DS would get hysterical anytime DH used the drill, or I used the food processor. DH was devastated and thought it would last, and he could never join him in the "mancave" LOL. He still clings to me, but he is getting much better. And this is in a house with an extremely loud 7yr old...

My DS reacts to loud laughing, mainly in groups of people, he gives me a frightened look, drops the bottom lip & cries. He's just turned 1 & we noticed this around 6 months old.
He's fine with vac and other household appliances, used to smile ear to ear when i pureed his food, just the loud laughing or sudden changes in pitch.

He's getting better, he didn't cry when everyone sang happy birthday though I did ask everyone keep it down a bit :-) I think h e'll grow out of it. Funny really cause he's quite the giggler himself.

First child? I ask because I am assuming that for the majority of time, your house is pretty quiet. I have a 6mo, my third. She doesn't startle for anything, not even blood curdling screams when the other two fight, but she has been listening to that since she was an egg.

Lol. I was thinking this too. My three year old has a habit of screaming this blood curdling scream, both when he's happy or cranky. Ben doesn't flinch. Ever.
