DS is 3 next month, he has never been too keen on doing wee's in the potty and I have never pushed the tt issue, but now he is close to 3, I feel like I should be a bit more motivated to have him toilet train.
He does get excited over wearing undies, but when I suggest regularly that he should try sitting on the potty or the toilet to get his wee's out, he cries and flat out refuses. This leads to him squatting in the corner secretly to relieve himself, unless I catch him in time and run him outside to wee on the grass (because he is hysterical when I try to take him to the potty). Any ideas on how to make the potty or toilet seem more appealing? Is he not ready? Should I just encourage him to wee on the grass to get used to the feeling of urinating? |

Doesn't sound like he is ready. My DS is 2.5 and is only just acknowledging when he does wee in the bath, will rarely sit on the potty and wee. Boys take time. I have just got a couple of apps one Elmo and one story book to start the conversation with him. Maybe try reading him stories about the potty to help him come around.

I didn't bother to TT my boys until 3.25yrs. No potty. Straight to the toilet. DS1 decided that he wanted to stand to wee. No problems.

I'm probably going to be shot down in flames, but I bribe mine horribly with chocolate
Give it a rest for a couple of weeks, then try again with whatever his weakness is. For DS1 it was jelly dinosaurs and DS2 it was a square of chocolate. Both trained for wees @ 3. Poos took a bit longer due to pooing in night nappies, but we got there in the end. I'm jut about to start with #3 because I am SICK OF NAPPIES. So if it all goes horribly wrong I'll be back here looking for the other advice you get |

Not ready yet I'd say. I would just leave it be.
In my experience it is the child who needs to show they are ready and not the parent thinking it is time. I made the mistake of equating a love for undies as a sign of readiness but it then took 4 years to become reliably TT. The others showed me they were ready by having dry nappies when they woke up and training was over and done with in a couple of weeks. Despite the reports of otherwise it is very common and perfectly 'normal' for a child to be well into their third year to have bladder and bowel control, there is a very large physiological factor and not so much psychological involved. Good luck, it will happen but it happens better when the pressure is off both of you. |

One of the tricks I have used is to have some "toilet toys".
So I went out and bought a few toys which are in a bag hanging on the toilet door, which are ONLY to be played with when sitting on the toilet. I just got cheap things from cheap as chips, looking for things which would grab her attention (so things which light up, or make a noise), and were not small enough to drop in the toilet. As far as getting her to the point of being happy to sit there, it worked well. Now I just have to work out how to get her to wee when she's sitting there! ETA: I also bribe with Lollies!
