20 year old with heart condition, centrelink won't help

Thought I would ask for any advice on this forum. Our 20 year old has a heart condition he was born with. He had a major heart op when he was 8. Things have gone fairly well health wise, but the heart problem has physically hit him this week. He was hospitalised and told he can't work until after he has another operation which could be 6 months or more. He works 20 hours per week and centrelink said he can't get sickness benefits because he is under 22 and he can't get any temp disability payments because his condition as it stands right now won't last 2 years. He can get $138 or so on newstart per fortnight, not enough to live. At least he lives at home. Surely there must be something.

Income protection through his superannuation? Mine has that as an automatic cover - I have to use all my sick leave first, but then I get to use the cover.

The super idea seems like the winner. Is it possible for you to get Carer allowance? Not that it will directly help him, but I guess since he still lives at home it would help you all. I assume that he already has a health care card? Will he need physio etc after the surgery for rehab? A Chronic Disease Management plan can put things like that onto Medicare. Just wishing your son all the best. I am a grown up heart kid, it is a hard road to travel.
