we do a food shopping list, a menu list for what we are eating for the week so pre-parpered and budgeted,
also have a budget on our fridge about money and where it goes pay each bill weekly not when they come a little here and there goes along way

We have additional tax taken out of our weekly pay allowing us enough back at tax time for a nice annual family holiday.
