What happened to a sense of wonder?

Posted by moral fibre, 29/03/2012, 11:29 AM

A little boy is in the Food Court chasing the small birds that have come to feed on food scraps and leftovers.

The boy is having fun in the simple idea that he and he alone can make the birds fly away.

Maybe he wishes he could fly or is simply spellbound by these tiny creatures in his world.

Just as he spies another feathered rascal in his midst, his father calls, "Come and sit down. Look out for people. Don't scare the birds. Watch the table!"

And in an instant, the boy's wonderment and joy is cut down.

Was he really in danger of hurting himself?

Was he really bothering anyone else?

Maybe the father was stressed with other things or maybe he just needed to remind his son and himself who was boss.

It is strange how such a mundane event can open your eyes to something bigger.

For here was a little boy trying to control some cheeky birds and a father trying to control his cheeky son.

I hope I remember to take a step back and let my children follow their joy, however small it may first seem.

We could all do with a little bit of wonder in our lives.
