Just noticed a comment in another thread about kids meals in restaurants.

What would you like to see in kids meals when you go out. It seems like the standard fair is

  1. Nuggets
  2. fish
  3. bangers and mash
  4. cheeseburger


So if you could influence a menu what would you put on it?

Kids pasta is good ie penne bolognaise or meatballs. Small sandwich like Vegemite, I love the ettamoga pub kids menu, almost like an adult menu just in kids sizes then the usual stuff as well. 3 choices of fish meals, lamb cutlets and veg, bangers and mash, chicken skewers, steak, pasta etc and you can choose salad, Chips or veg.

a variety of gluten free food my DS would eat! Like chicken nuggets and chips/fish and chips, sandwich of some sort. our regular restuarant only really has chips he will tolerate lucky he loves chips his super fussy

I'd just prefer a small serve of whatever is already on the menu.  As is, I normally just share my meal.

this came up a year or so ago with a poster looking for suggestions for her restaurant.

I had just come back from NZ where we had the most delicious meal in the Speigh's Brewery in Dunedin.

DD was 18 months at the time and we ordered the 'kid's picnic plate'.  It was a selection of cheese, cherry tomatoes, cold meat, bread roll, vegie sticks, fairy bread, custard, strawberries, rockmelon...  Dinner and dessert all rolled into one, served with our entrees and large enough and interesting enough for her to pick at all night whilst we ate our meals

She loved it!

Things on a plate, as we call it at home. Like a child sized tasting platter. We have smoked salmon, brie, water crackers, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, grapes... Whatever's there, really. They eat with their fingers and love it.

to add, we would mostly choose the kid's pasta dish at restaurants - though have seen some serve spaghetti pasta instead of bows/penne

Kids tasting plate is a great idea!
Or some chicken souvlaki with some toasted turkish bread
Spaghetti or other pastas like carbonara

We have a great local restaurant that has amazing food original.gif they don't have a kids menu as such but you can get anything off the regular menu in a kids size for $6-$8, and its a good size serve too! DD1, who is a big eater, still gets the kids size meal and it fills her up.

It's a great option because DD1 doesn't like getting a 'kids' meal as she's not a kid  rolleyes.gif

I was quite impressed with the kids meal at the GOMA (Brisbane) cafe - i think it came with a sandwich, fruit salad and cupcake.

I second the platter of finger food.  The other option that worked well for us was an entree serve of bread and dips.  I always wished it was on the kids menu.

More things that are NOT crumbed or fried. A pasta in white sauce rather than bolegnese, and more vegetables, especially green ones!
My kids won't eat nuggets or crumbed fish. DS will eat a burger, DD won't. Both kids prefer carbonara to bolegnese. They are also not too keen on chips with a meal.

Dishes I KNOW they will eat are lasagne, carbonara, quiche, soups, DD will also eat ANYTHING green unless it is sweet. They'll both eat anything they can dip things in.

I'll often order a shared plate of nachos for them, or a soup and crusty bread from the adult menu as they will eat an entree sized serve of soup if it has bread with it. If there is a pasta dish on the childrens menu I can usually safely order that and have them eat it.

Standard menu in "entree" size. Or dropping the attitude when you ask for an extra plate and cutlery so you can split a main among children.

This exactly. I don't go out to eat nice food and expect my kids to eat deep fried garbage. I want then to eat what we are having. It's not rocket science. rolleyes.gif

Any number of pasta dishes.
Tuna / Chicken salads.
Special fried rice.
Eggs on toast.
Sushi.

I do think kiddie menus tend very restrictive, overly deep fried affairs.

I can't stand the food most resturants have on their kids menus, my DD does't eat processed crappy nuggets & the fish is usually coated in such thick batter it is gross.

My DD loves salmon steaks, spaghetti & roasts so meals like this for kids would be fantastic.

I also like the suggestions of a tasting platter of crackers, cheese & fruit, my DD would eat that.

Plain old boring sandwiches. Just cheese or ham. DD is a fussy eater so always ends up with hot chips since they are the only thing she'll eat at most places.

This, I love a restaurant that will accommodate you, we will go back again and again.  It can't be that hard to change a main into an entree. My 6 y.o will order gnocchi if it's on the menu and a main is just too big, although he does a damn good job trying.

We only have a toddler at this stage (2 in June), and tend to just share our meals.  I usually take a "travel set" DS has which has a plate, cutlery and sippy cup.  

Other ideas:
- boiled egg with toast fingers and steamed green beans for dipping.
- bread and dips
- mini ploughhman's lunch (bread, cheese, ham, tomato, sweet pickles)
- spinach and ricotta filo parcels
- homemade mini pie with mash and greens

In general though, I think a 1/2 serve of main menu dishes is usually the best.  Even DS will often have this if available.

Another who would like to see entree sized serves of main meals.

Or else what I saw in Wagamama when we were in Dublin last year, a plate with noodles, julienned carrots and cucumber, bean sprouts and chicken, all in separate piles with the sauce on the side so that your kid could mix and match what they wanted to eat.

DD loves plain noodles, carrot and chicken but hates the sauce so she was happy, and another kid I saw mixed the whole lot up and had a ball.

My kids aren't fussy eaters until it comes to "kids' menus", because they usually don't want what's on them. DD (9) is mostly vegetarian and has been ordering from the adults' entree menu for a while now. DS (5) is a little more flexible and might choose a burger or pasta if it's there.

I won't let them skip straight to the dessert menu  tongue.gif  so they would probably choose:
toasted sandwiches
nachos (beans or beef)
hamburger with salad (not just meat + bun + chips)
pasta with something other than bolognaise sauce, eg. pesto, napolitana
lasagne (vegie or beef)
mezze plate, ie. dips and bread and vegie sticks or something like that
eggs on toast
quiche and salad
cheese plate with fruit

And please, no dressing on the salad. original.gif

This!  My kids, even the teenagers, still love it when we have this for dinner.
