I always thought Vivian was a male spelling....could be wrong though?

#5 laridae

Posted 12 April 2012 - 07:21 AM

I would think a male for that spelling.

Vivien or Vivienne for a girl.

Vivienne is my grandmother's name so I quite like it. We would've used it for a middle name if DS2 had been a girl.

Thoughts:

Vivienne is a GORGEOUS name. original.gif

Your rules, especially #2, are too restrictive. wink.gif

I'm not a fan but that's an association thing for me. I much prefer Genevieve.

I love Colin though. original.gif

It's DD's MN, so I love it! That spelling too - DD is named after someone.

I thought the male spelling was more Vyvyan? But in any event, I don't think it's that clear a distinction in spelling.

I think Vivien is the more common spelling for girls but any of the three alternatives are acceptable to me.

I'm not a massive fan, although I prefer the spelling Vivienne.

I like the previous suggestion of Genevieve; gorgeous original.gif

Vivian is a boys names to me. Don't mind Vivienne, but its very Angelina for me.

I also wouldn't worry about some of your restrictions, but I guess you have them for a reason.
If you can let up on the 6 letters thing, I think Vivienne is the prettiest, most feminine spelling of the name.

Gotta say I love all the PP's who suggested Genevieve, +1!

Other names on my list

I believe Vivien Leigh was born with the Vivian spelling and then her agent recommended she change it.

I have to say I don't think "boy" for any of the spellings honestly. I think Vivienne is pretty but a bit frilly in a way that Vivien/Vivian isn't.

At the moment I'm really into V names for some reason, just very pretty and femme.

I like Genevieve but I prefer ALL the spellings of Vivian/Vivien/Vivienne to it.

I know it breaks your ends in -a rule (but follows the number of letters rule, that's something, right?) but I love Viveca/Vivica as well. It's like the best bits of Vivienne and Annika for me as far as sound, without being made up.

And Violet comes in under the wire, doesn't it? I do love Violet.

Young Ones here too, which isn't necessarily a bad thing  wink.gif

My vote is for the Vivienne spelling.

I'd go with Vivien if you must stick with 6 letters. I've actually grown to prefer it to Vivienne (but then I'm not one for the fussy French spellings).

You don't come from a cricket playing nation. A lot of Australians (and people from other cricket playing nations) hear the name Vivian and automatically add "Richards" to the end. Sir Vivian Richards is a very famous former West Indian cricketer.

That's probably true.

So I guess I would go Vivien.

No points awarded for Vivi-Anne which I saw on one of the Toddlers in Tiaras or something once at my MIL's house.

I like Vivienne - it's a MN contender if this one is a girl but it's a family name.

Your other contenders of Violet and Iris are lovely. Paige, NMS
